Park Hyatt Opening In Jamaica On May 21 (Ritz-Carlton Reflag)

by John Ollila on May 16, 2013

Park Hyatt is replacing the Ritz-Carlton brand as the operator of the Jamaica property. The last day the hotel operates as Ritz-Carlton is May 20th and the Hyatt should take over on 21st. You can read more about this change on The Jamaica Gleaner’s website here.

It is not atypical for the hotels to be reflagged, but you should expect some disturbances for few months as all the Ritz-Carlton affiliated management personnel will leave on 20th and the park Hyatt affiliated will step in on 21st. Likely most of the customer facing staff will remain.

The hotel currently has 427 rooms and the new owner is planning to add more than 100 suites. This would be a big Park Hyatt property that tend to be smaller and intimate rather than huge and grandiose.

It is always good to see Hyatt expanding, although in this instance on Marriott’s expense. I would likely avoid the property for at least a year due to the extensive renovations that the new owner has planned for the property.

What’s the usual timeline for announcing what category the hotel will be? Might be a good opportunity to transfer UR points to Hyatt for a nice Caribbean getaway.

Hyatt is now claiming that this would not be becoming their property contradictory to the news paper story. I will do an update tomorrow.
