IHG Rewards Club has just launched a promotion for buying maximum of 50,000 points and getting 50% bonus. The maximum number of points that you can purchase is 75,000 (50K base + 25K bonus. This offer is valid for purchases made between June 13 to 23, 2013.

If you buy more than 26,000 points, the price of a point after the 50% bonus has been factored in is 0.77 cents each. You can access this offer here. The purchase is processed by Points.com and is not eligible for any IHG Rewards Club Visa bonus points.

Does it make sense to purchase IHG Rewards Club points at 0.77 cents (USD)?

Just for buying the points, when there is a sale going on. The answer is no. If you have use for points for i.e. Point Breaks for for relatively expensive hotel such is InterContinental in Moorea that is only 25,000 points per night, then the answer is maybe.

Way to buy IHG Rewards Club points at 0.7 cents (USD)

You can continuously purchase IHG Rewards Club points (I have written about this previously) at 0.7 cents each.

IHG Rewards Club allows you to purchase up to 10,000 points per award night and charges $70 for them. These are first deposited to your account and then IHG Rewards Club charges the full point rate for the night.

You can cancel the reservation and IHG doesn’t reverse the purchased points transaction. I would not, however, go overboard and do this too frequently.

Conclusion

This is the lowest price that IHG Rewards Club officially sells points. You can, however, purchase them for 10% less by just going the route that I have outlined above by doing Points & Money award reservation and later canceling them.

Here are the terms and conditions of this sale:

Price includes all applicable fees. Purchased Points are not refundable and are applicable toward all Priority Club® Rewards awards. Members may purchase a maximum of 50,000 points per calendar year and receive as a gift a maximum of 50,000 points per year. Please allow 24-48 hours for points to post to appear in the recipient’s account. All other Priority Club® Rewards Terms and Conditions apply.

Of course the purchase of these points don’t count towards elite status :-(

Shouldn’t affect most AS LONG AS IHG does easy status matches from i.e. Le Club Accorhotels Platinum status.

Theoretically it’s possible to get points cheaper. I generated points in several accounts with different surways (like this one: http://usa-survey.priorityclub.com/mwpvwj and several others which are still active) and then paid 5USD to transfer 1000 points to main account (use this link https://buy.points.com/PointsPartnerFrames/partners/ihg/container.html?product=transfer). But also this trick is is risky and can be used only if few thousand points are missing.

I would advise against doing this. The monetary saving is very little and you are really putting your accounts in danger.

Same risk as with earned points from cancelled reservations
