Delta SkyMiles Silver, Gold & Platinum Medallion Status Match Challenge

Delta has official status match program that is publicized on its website here. You can get one-time match to the same level that you have with competing airline and then you have 90-days to fulfill the flight requirement (Medallion miles or segments) to keep the status.

For challenges starting after July 1, 2013, the successfully completed challenges will grant the status until the end of February 2015.

Delta will match your status for 90 days at Silver, Gold or Platinum level. Delta, however, doesn’t have public matches to their highest Diamond level.

You need 8,000 MQM’s (Medallion Qualifying Miles) or 10 MQS’s (Medallion Qualifying Segments) for Silver, 16,000 MQM’s or 20 MQS’s for Gold, and 26,000 MQM’s or 35 MQS’s for Platinum within the 90 day period after your status match challenge has been processed by Delta.

Note that there are first, business and high economy fares that earn more than 100% MQM’s. Also, there are some unpublished fares that won’t earn the full MQM.

How to request challenge?

1. You need to fulfill the short form on Delta’s website here

2. You need to send a copy of your current elite card from competing airline or an account statement by email to SMSCEliteFaxes.Delta@delta.com or by fax to 404-773-1880

You should receive an acknowledgment from Delta in couple of days and your new temporarily status should reflect on Delta.com.

You have 90 days to fulfill the flight requirement, but you should check the date that Delta has assigned as the starting date of the challenge because it is not necessarily the date when you receive the email about the match. This is important if you are fulfilling the requirement at the end of the 90-day period.

You are not eligible for this offer if you currently have a Medallion status or if you did a status match or were given complimentary status in the past.

Conclusion

You should use this status match facility wisely, as it is supposedly only once in a lifetime with Delta. I went through this matching process myself few years ago and it was processed promptly and I made it all the way to Diamond status in one year.

I like Delta’s Medallion upgrades and domestic flight product. I am not a huge fan of the SkyMiles programs as a whole, however, due to difficulty using miles for international premium class award travel.
