Marriott Rewards Terms & Conditions Changes Regarding Account Closures

Marriott has updated the terms and conditions of its Marriott Rewards program on September 17, 2013. Nothing has been communicated to program members.

The changes mainly deal with the situation where Marriott would like to cancel the member’s rewards account.

Here’s the copy of the pre-September 17, 2013, terms and conditions:

In the case of fraud or abuse involving the Rewards Program, Point credit, Miles credit, Reward use, or a participating hotel, the Company and its travel partners have the right to take appropriate administrative and/or legal action, including but not limited to revocation/cancellation of any Reward and/or termination of Rewards Program Membership, and all Miles or Points and certificates (“Certificates”) earned through the Rewards Program may be forfeited and any relevant Membership Account(s) closed.

Membership in the Rewards Program, including any Reward Certificates that may have been issued to a Member, may be revoked or suspended at the Company’s sole discretion if a Member fails to pay any Marriott Vacation Club ownership related fees, bills due to the Company or participating hotels, and/or accounts at participating hotels that may be due.

Here are the current terms and conditions:

The Company reserves the right to revoke, cancel or suspend any Rewards Program Membership, elite membership status (including Lifetime Silver, Lifetime Gold and Lifetime Platinum status), Reward, and/or any and all unredeemed Points or Miles, or take other action at its discretion, at any time with immediate effect and without written notice, if Company believes the Member has (1) violated any of the Program Rules, (2) failed to pay any bills or accounts due to the Company or a participating hotel or any ownership related fees owed to Marriott Vacation Club, (3) acted in a manner inconsistent with applicable law, regulations or ordinances, (4) engaged in any misconduct or wrongdoing in connection with the Rewards Program, including without limitation, involving Point credit, Mile credit, Reward use, or Member benefits, or (5) engaged in abusive, fraudulent, inappropriate, or hostile conduct in connection with the Rewards Program, the participating hotels or their guests or employees, or the Company or its employees.

Nothing in these Program Rules will limit Company from exercising any legal rights or remedies that it may have.

Here are the reasons for possible account closures:

(1) violated any of the Program Rules

(2) failed to pay any bills or accounts due to the Company or a participating hotel or any ownership related fees owed to Marriott Vacation Club

(3) acted in a manner inconsistent with applicable law, regulations or ordinances

(4) engaged in any misconduct or wrongdoing in connection with the Rewards Program, including without limitation, involving Point credit, Mile credit, Reward use, or Member benefits

(5) engaged in abusive, fraudulent, inappropriate, or hostile conduct in connection with the Rewards Program, the participating hotels or their guests or employees, or the Company or its employees.

So, basically Marriott reserves the right to cancel members account for any reason.

Conclusion

Marriott has more clearly communicated on the updated Terms and conditions the situations where it may cancel member’s account(s), as they put it.

It is interesting that they have more clearly communicated that non-payment of fees to Marriott Vacation Club may lead to the person being expunged from the Marriott Rewards program as well. Are more Marriott Vacation Club members defaulting on their obligations?

They have added the line of inappropriate behavior towards the Marriott Rewards or hotel employees that could account termination as well.
