LAST CALL: SPG Award Category Changes March 1, 2016 (Book Before Tuesday!)

Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) made an announcement the other week about 2016 award category changes that will take effect on March 1, 2016. Tomorrow (Tuesday February 29) is the last day to book awards at their current levels.

There are 167 SPG properties moving up minimum of one award category representing 14% of all Starwood hotels and 112 properties move down by an award category (one by two cats).

You have to bear in mind that the number of Starpoints will change drastically percentage wise when award categories changes:

Category 1 to 2: Change of 25% in number of Starpoints required

Category 2 to 3: Change of 75% in number of Starpoints required

Category 3 to 4: Change of 43% in number of Starpoints required

Category 4 to 5: Change of 20% to 60% in number of Starpoints required

Category 5 to 6: Change of 67% to 108% in number of Starpoints required

Category 6 to 7: Change of 50% to 75% in number of Starpoints required

Conclusion

You should have a look at the hotels that are moving up in award category to see if there are any where you might stay in the next year. By booking now (you can always cancel and have the point deposited back to your account) you can save a lot.
