United Airlines Buy MileagePlus Miles 25% – 100% Mystery Bonus December 6 – 19, 2016

by -

United Airlines has launched a new campaign for buying MileagePlus miles at an account specific 25% to 100% “mystery” bonus between December 6 – 19, 2016.

United Airlines has promotions pretty much every month for buying miles, but they all max at a 100% bonus or a 50% discount (exactly the same offer because United limits the number of miles one can purchase per year including any possible bonuses to 150K).

You can access this offer on United’s website here.

Does it make sense to purchase United miles?

If you use them for international business or first class tickets between expensive city pairs, then the answer is likely yes.

Sebastian recently wrote about his United award ticket success to Australia from Asia that was only 40,000 miles in combined business/first (read more here).

My personal bonus for buying United miles under this offer is (horrible) 25% bonus. Unless you need to miles right now for good award redemption, I would wait for 50% off or 100% bonus offer that will come around few times every year.

Here are the terms and conditions of this offer:

  • Promotional offer valid until 11:59 p.m. CT on December 19, 2016.
  • Miles are available in increments of 1,000 up to a maximum of 100,000 miles, and in increments of 5,000 up to a maximum of 120,000 miles.

  • Bonus Miles will be credited to the recipient’s account when the transaction is complete.

25% via promo OR Accelerator @ 2 cents per mile (18,000 @ $360). Little if any value with the promo. Other options to acquire United miles.

This says 25%-100% Mystery Bonus during this promotion; depending on what it states when you log in with your United account number. So, some may only get 25% bonus and some may get 100% or in between.

Luck was not on my side. 25% bonus.

This is one of the most stupid and discriminatory promotions I have ever seen, due to the ‘mystery’ factor. So what please is the determining factor for the percentage of bonus being offered? (Premier status?). I am Premier Silver, and got offered 75%, my girlfriend has no status, has not flown United in years, and is only being offered 25%. They had the same gig going last year, and the day after it was finished, they gave 100% above 30K for three days. That’s when I bought. Of course they did not tell me about that offer, but my German site ‘First Class and More’ alerted me to it.

        • I don’t think that there is a reason to get too much worked up. There are at least twice a year an open sale at either 100% bonus or 50% off and we have always covered them as well.

If I purchase miles with my United card or Chase Sapphire Reserve, do I get a travel points bonus with either?

    • Richard

The purchase is via points dot com and the rule of thumb is points dot com purchases are not travel.
