A LoyaltyLobby reader sent me a question by email regarding getting points for two different promotions that applied for some nights during his stay.
Here’s the email from the reader:
Wanted to run a situation by you with Club Carlson. I recently had a stay in Bahrain at the Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel from 29 OCT – 10 NOV. Prior to leaving for the trip I had registered for one of their promotions that would earn triple points on weekend stays. That promotion ended 31 OCT which was a Monday. I then registered for their next promotion that started on 1 NOV and awarded double points on every night.
Once I returned home and the stay points were credited I noticed that there were no bonus promotion points. I called customer service and after lengthy hold times with the agent checking with various people, she determined based on her supervisor that I would not earn promotion points for the OCT part of the stay because my trip took me into NOV and I would not earn promotion points for the the NOV part of my stay because my trip started in OCT. This ended up being about 40,000 points being left on the table.
I have Diamond status with Hyatt and Hilton and the only reason I stayed at a Radisson in Bahrain is based on my employer and the fact there are no Hyatt or Hilton branded hotels in Bahrain. I was however happy to get a status match and try to earn as many points as possible to get a free stay at the Radisson Blu in Chicago or something else. It just seems like a bad policy for Club Carlson to restrict there promotion like this and maybe it was in the fine print. I am wondering if anyone else has had an issue like this.
This is an interesting question and wanted to check what the promo T&Cs actually stay about this:
The double & triple points promo August 1 – October 31:
Both the check-in and checkout dates of the Eligible Stay must take place within the Promotion Period. Bonus Gold Points will be credited to the member’s account when the standard Gold Points are credited for the Eligible Stay and will usually be posted to a member’s account within 8 to 10 days after the Eligible Stay has been completed.
Current double points or elite nights November 1 – December 31:
Both the check-in and checkout dates of the Eligible Stay must take place within the Promotion Period. Bonus Gold Points or Elite Qualifying Nights will be credited to the member’s account when the standard Gold Points or Elite Qualifying Nights are credited for the Eligible Stay and will usually be posted to a member’s account within 8 to 10 days after the Eligible Stay has been completed.
So, the fact is that one doesn’t earn any bonus points per T&Cs IF either the check in or check out date is outside of the promotional window. Many other programs require that the stay merely overlaps with these dates or gives bonus points for those nights that are within the promotion. This is not, however, the case with Club Carlson.
The reader should have stayed the first three nights at some other property and then check in to the Radisson Blu on November 1 to earn bonus points for most of the nights.
I don’t think that it would hurt to Tweet this issue to Club Carlson or write on their Facebook page. It doesn’t make any sense that they disadvantage guests that stay longer.
It would be better if Club Carlson would give at the minimum the bonus for those nights that are within the promotional period. It is just nuts that someone cannot check in on October 29 for 10+ nights if they want to take advantage of the promo starting on November 1.
I have stayed at both InterContinental and Sheraton hotels in Bahrain and thought that both were fine.
