Buy & Gift American Airlines AAdvantage Miles With Up To 50% Bonus By January 30, 2017 (Makes Very Little Sense)

American Airlines AAdvantage rolled out yet another points purchase promotion for January for which purchases have to be made by January 30th, 2017.

American offers a tiered bonus of up to 50% for this particular sale which makes very little sense considering the previous discount/bonus amounts which will almost certainly come back.

You can buy & gift AAdvantage miles campaign with up to an 50% bonus and a while ago American Airlines upped the number of miles that you can buy before any bonuses to 150,000 every calendar year.

Why is the number of miles important? The higher the allowed purchase amount per year the more you can take advantage of promotions and it’s much easier for example to purchase a large number of miles if you plan to travel with companions.

You can access this offer on AA’s website here.

A bonus of of to 50% (tiered based on the amount of points purchased) is mediocre for AAdvantage sales.

Here is the Bonus Schedule to see how it’s distributed:

The last promotion that ended 3 days ago gave you 72,000 AAdvantage Miles Bonus for 100k purchased while this time you only get 50k.

Here you can see the pricing should you purchase the maximum amount of 150,000 miles (which makes zero sense, unless you really need the miles you should only buy 100k as the Bonus maxes out at that amount already).

This offer at the 150,000 level with 50,000 bonus is not very lucrative I’d say. American Airlines sold miles earlier this year at 1.72 cents each so it’s far from the best they ever had.

Conclusion

I’d say sit this one out unless you have immediate use for the miles and it makes financial sense but I doubt you will find many situation where this is the case.

There are still instances where purchasing points even at these rates can make sense but you have to carefully compare market prices for paid tickets with the rate for miles. You should also secure availability for your desired award flights ahead of time when purchasing points with AA (You can call ahead and make a reservation, tell the agent a big points transfer should either arrive today or tomorrow). Fares were very low in 2016 so sometimes it’s better to buy a revenue fare instead of using or purchasing frequent flyer miles and keep those for emergencies or when fares are high.

These are the Terms and conditions of this promotion:
