Conclusion

Nothing too drastic this year and move properties moving down than up. Even when more properties will become cheaper using points, usually those where you actually want to redeem do go up.

This is probably the last year when I need to write up about SPG award category changes. I would assume that the new combined SPG-Marriott program will start on January 1, 2018.

Curious as to what you think the timing is with your expectation of a combined program as of January 1 , 2017:

We will be able to book Starwood hotels at the newly announced rates from march 7 until what date approximately?
Similarly we will be able to book Marriott hotels at the newly announced rates from march 7 until what date approximately?

Marriott will tell us what we need to do to qualify for platinum or gold or whatever they call it on approximately what date (as well as let us know what privileges such status offers)?

Personally I am only aiming for 25 stay platinum at Starwood in 2017 — as I don’t know what more I would get with 50 nights at Starwood, or 75 at Starwood or 75 at Marriott.
    Wondering if that is stupid.

Surpirised to see that vftw and Omaat have so many more comments. Of the three sites this is the one that has saved me money and gotten me free stays and benefits.

    • LoyaltyLobby has more international readership and non-native speakers are probably less likely to comment. I also don’t usually ask readers to comment like many other sites do.

You can link your Marriott and SPG accounts for movings points between accounts.

I would assume that there is a combined program come 2018. Whether stays/nights consumed at both programs will count towards the 2018 programs, remains to be seen.
