The price of a point purchased at the 100% bonus is 0.575 cents each.

Does it make sense to purchase points?

Purchasing points merely because they are on sale doesn’t make sense. If you have a good use for them, buying can lower the price of the stays considerably.

Usually using points make sense at the most expensive properties, during PointBreaks when some hotels are just 5,000 points per night, or when the paid rates are through the roof due to some event in the city.

Conclusion

This is the lowest price that IHG Rewards Club sells points several times a year. They have occasionally raised the purchase limit for some later in the year if they have maxed out the cap. Good time to buy now if you have use for IHG points.

It can also be worthwhile to buy points if you need to reach the minimum spend to trigger the sign up bonus on your credit card. Here’s looking at you, Amex Plat 🙂

You can save money at 30k redemptions, like I did in Japan 7 nights in a row! In the States at 10k a room costs less than $60, at 5k which I usually have no problem finding since there is an IHG hotel everywhere, I can get 24 nights using this offer. You don’t always have to stay at an Intercontinental property to get good value.

John – where do you find the 5k nights? Aside from PointBreaks, I’ve never seen regular reward nights for less than 10k. Thanks.

If we buy points using the IHG credit card, does the purchase qualify as a purchase from IHG (five points per dollar)?

    • No, unfortunately IHG points purchases are processed through points.com, so it actually doesn’t even count as a travel category spend for those cards that earn bonuses in that category. So recommendation is to use a card that gives you the highest return for everyday spend.
