We received a Reader Question today asking if it’s a good choice to redeem Marriott Rewards points for a Priority Pass Membership, an option that was added not too long ago.

Remember that you can always email us, send a message via Facebook or use Twitter and include photos too. We’ll try to cover Reader Questions & Comments here several times a week.

Marriott Rewards added the option of redeeming points for an annual Membership of the Priority Pass Lounge Membership in the end of 2016 but the value is questionable as it represents a very low ratio.

The reader wrote:

Hi John and Sebastian,

I’ve got a rather large balance of Marriott points and consider redeeming a Priority Pass membership which would cost me 85,000 points for one year. Do you consider this a good idea or is there some better way of getting the membership?

Thanks for your insight. -Sal

You can access Marriott’s website with the redemption option here.

As I mentioned before when writing about Priority Pass (see my last article here and the piece about the still active special offer for VISA Cardholders here) it really just makes sense to get the full, unlimited membership that allows as many visits as you like.

My answer to our reader Sal was that 85,000 MR points is a lot, representing min 2 nights at a Category 8 property and I don’t consider this a good value at all.

The above linked special offer for VISA Cardholders is $299 per year for the unlimited pass. On top of that you can get Priority Pass as a benefit of some premium credit cards such as American Express Platinum or Chase Sapphire Reserve.

Conclusion

Loyalty programs add redemption options of different variety such as merchandise, shopping vouchers or even such a Priority Pass membership and mostly these are horrible value. Keep in mind that the program has to pay the providers of these products in cash.

If the reader really likes the PP membership I suggest either taking advantage of the Visa offer or to get  a credit card where it is included.

I was also considering the same option, I have over 300k Marriott points which I’m not using, I was considering PP as well but then decided to get the Visa infinite from CitiBank which provides me almost over 500+ lounges around the world as a lounge key member in addition to +1 guest complimentary per visit.
