Bose Devices Eavesdropping On You And Selling The Information To Third Parties!

Seems that Bose has some trouble on its’ hand. The company sells popular noise canceling headphones under the QuietComfort line that is favored by many frequent travelers.

Bose Lawsuit

Bose has an Android and iPhone app that can be used to control the QC35 headphones and other devices. It seems to have come as a surprise to the complainant that the company records all the songs and podcasts that the user listens to and sells this information to third parties. Apparently this is done without giving adequate disclosure.

Reuters wrote about this yesterday (access here) of which below is an excerpt:

Bose Corp spies on its wireless headphone customers by using an app that tracks the music, podcasts and other audio they listen to, and violates their privacy rights by selling the information without permission, a lawsuit charged.

The complaint filed on Tuesday by Kyle Zak in federal court in Chicago seeks an injunction to stop Bose’s “wholesale disregard” for the privacy of customers who download its free Bose Connect app from Apple Inc or Google Play stores to their smartphones.

“People should be uncomfortable with it,” Christopher Dore, a lawyer representing Zak, said in an interview. “People put headphones on their head because they think it’s private, but they can be giving out information they don’t want to share.”

Conclusion

You pay $349 for these headphone and the company then sells the information about what you listen to third parties? Very inconsiderate and seems that Bose has become arrogant here.

I have owned (and lost) few Bose headphones in the past. Personally, I much prefer earbuds over headphones. Impossible to sleep having these on and I do not need any more large gadgets in my computer bag.
