Conclusion

I would say that generally it doesn’t make sense to convert hotel points to airline miles but there are cases when it does make sense.

You can buy (until Sunday nights) 30,000 Starpoints for $720 that after SPG and AA bonuses converts to 43,750 miles (essentially buying them at 1.65 cents each – cheaper than buying them directly from AA). You can read more about this soon expiring offer here.

I tend to use my Marriott Rewards points for Travel Packages (read more here) that has 7 night hotel stay and in case of AA 120,000 miles component. 270,000 Marriott Rewards points now would be enough to 150,000 AA miles (with the 25% bonus) + week at category 1 – 5 properties.

It may make sense to convert points from other programs as well if you have no better use for them.
