Conclusion

It does make some sense to convert hotel points to airline miles especially with hotel programs where you get little return for your points when redeeming for hotel stays (such as SPG).

You can currently buy 30,000 Starpoints for $680 that after SPG and AA bonuses converts to 43,750 miles (essentially buying them cheaper than buying them directly from AA). You can read more about this offer here.

The best deal is to use Marriott Rewards points for Travel Packages (read more here) that comes with a 7 night hotel stay and in case of AA a 120,000 miles component. 270,000 Marriott Rewards points now would be enough to convert to 150,000 AA miles (with the 25% bonus) + one week at category 1 – 5 properties.

It may make sense to convert points from other programs as well if you have no better use for them. Also keep in mind that AAdvantage has devalued their award chart considerably in some areas so better check on that first.

Here are the terms and conditions of this offer:

To qualify for this AAdvantage® 25% bonus mile offer, member must initiate the AAdvantage mileage conversions with participating eligible AAdvantage program hotel participants (“Hotel Partner(s)”) between 12:00 am Central time on April 28, 2017 and 11:59 pm Central time on June 15, 2017 (the “Promotion Period”), and must be in good standing in the AAdvantage program.

Members can convert multiple times with multiple Hotel Partners. Conversions for hotel and air packages from Hotel Partners are included for this offer. This offer is non-transferable and cannot be combined with any other offers.

Bonus miles will be posted by American Airlines to the qualifying AAdvantage member’s account within 7 business days after the initial conversion activity has been posted by the participating Hotel Partner. Bonus miles earned in this promotion do not count toward elite status qualification.

You must check with the participating Hotel Partner to confirm what counts as a qualified conversion.

If I initiate the transfer now and the miles arrive after June 15th, will I still get the bonus?

    • As long as the transfer is initiated on 15th of June, regardless when it actually hits the AA account, you will be eligible for the bonus. Just keep records to be on the safe side.
