Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) 50 Nights Benefit Choices 2017

Few years ago, SPG introduced new benefits for those members that stay 50, 75, or 100 nights. The Platinum qualification criteria has stayed at 25 stays or 50 nights.

Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) 50 Nights Benefit Selection 2017

Members that stay 50 nights during the calendar year can choose one benefit from number of options that have changed few times during the years.

You can access SPG’s web page for SPG 50 benefits here.

Note that you must use the sign in box on the upper right on that page and not the one show on the screenshot above once you have hit the 50 nights.

Conclusion

I just passed the 50 qualifying SPG nights for 2017 (seems that could perhaps make it to Ambassador this year) and was presented the options above when I went to check the options for the 50 night gift.

There are two options that are worthwhile here and the SPG Gold status mainly due to the match between SPG and Marriott Rewards.

The Suite Night Awards (SNAs) in my opinion are useless. Platinum members are eligible for space available upgrades at the time of checking in (usually these are processed by the team working overnight). SNAs won’t confirm more than 5 days before of your intended stay at max and often not at all.

Five elite qualifying nights only make sense if it puts you over 75 or 100 nights for the extra benefits that come at those levels. The donation to the UNICEF would be $100 and not tax deductible for the SPG member. Starwood likely takes the deduction. 40% discount for buying a Starwood branded bed?

The award night Starpoints value can be anywhere from 12,000 to 16,000 depending of the season.

The gifting of SPG Gold status can now make sense because it maps to Marriott Rewards Gold status that comes with club lounge upgrades and/or breakfast.

My SPG 50 night choice benefit in 2016 was the free night award and in 2015 a $100 Amazon.com gift code. I haven’t yet decided what I will choose this year but it won’t be the SNAs.

Here are the terms and conditions of the various award options:

One Free Night Award — Terms and Conditions:

Please see the SPG Terms and Conditions for full details regarding Free Night Awards. To the extent that terms are capitalized in these one Free Night Award terms and conditions, the terms have the meanings specified in the SPG Terms and Conditions.

The Free Night Award must be redeemed for a Stay that occurs no later than December 31, 2018.

The Free Night Award will be credited to the Platinum Member’s account within 2–4 weeks of the Platinum Member selecting this option as his/her Platinum 50 Eligible Nights Benefit. The Free Night Award can be redeemed at any SPG Participating Hotel that is SPG Category 1–5 for a standard room for any night.

Members should call SPG Customer Contact Center and mention Award ID PS0-FN 1–5 to redeem. Free Night Award is not transferable and may not be redeemed for cash or Starpoints®. Unused Free Night Award will be forfeited. Free Night Award stay(s) and night(s) will count toward earning Elite Preferred Guest Membership Status. Free Night Awards are combinable and may be added to existing paid or Award Stays.

The Free Night Award includes all applicable taxes; however, the Platinum Member may be responsible for payment of additional mandatory resort fees at SPG Participating Hotels where resort fees are applicable.

Free Night Award redemptions may be canceled pursuant to the Free Night Award cancellation policy on the SPG Program website (spg.com).

An eligible SPG Member should check his/her account to confirm the expiration date of his/her Free Night Award.

Five Elite-Qualifying Nights — Terms and Conditions:

Please see the SPG Terms and Conditions for full details regarding Platinum 50 Eligible Nights Benefits. To the extent that terms are capitalized in these Five Elite-Qualifying Nights terms and conditions, the terms have the meanings specified in the SPG Terms and Conditions.

Upon an eligible Platinum Member selecting the Five Eligible Nights as his/her Platinum 50 Eligible Nights Benefit, the Platinum Member will have his/her SPG Member account credited with five (5) Eligible Nights toward earning Elite Preferred Guest Membership Status. Eligible Nights and Elite Preferred Guest Membership Status are subject to the SPG Terms and Conditions.

Eligible Nights that are awarded to an eligible Platinum Member as the Platinum Member’s Platinum 50 Eligible Nights Benefit will be awarded in the 2017 Qualifying Period, regardless of when the Platinum Member selects the Five Eligible Nights as his/her Platinum 50 Eligible Nights Benefit. For the avoidance of doubt, the Eligible Nights that are awarded will not be credited toward earning Elite Preferred Guest Membership Status in any Qualifying Period other than the 2017 Qualifying Period.

Eligible Nights awarded as an eligible Platinum Member’s Platinum 50 Eligible Nights Benefit will not apply toward the Eligible Night requirement for earning Elite Preferred Guest Membership Status as further described in the SPG Terms and Conditions.

Suite Night Awards — Terms and Conditions:

Please see the SPG Terms and Conditions for full details regarding Platinum 50 Eligible Nights Benefits. To the extent that terms are capitalized in these Suite Night Awards terms and conditions, the terms have the meanings specified in the SPG Terms and Conditions.

Suite Night Awards may be redeemed for advanced confirmable upgrades for select premium rooms or standard suites on a per-room, per-night basis, subject to availability.

Suite Night Award upgrades must be requested through the SPG Program website (spg.com) or by contacting a Customer Contact Center no later than 2:00 p.m. (local hotel time) one day prior to arrival. If a request for a Suite Night Award upgrade is confirmed, a confirmation email will be sent to the requesting SPG Member.

Suite Night Awards may only be redeemed for upgrades in connection with a Stay.

Requests for Suite Night Award upgrades and confirmed Suite Night Award redemptions may be canceled pursuant to the Suite Night Award cancellation policy on the SPG Program website (spg.com).

Suite Night Awards have expiration dates that may be different from other SPG Program benefits (for full details, see the SPG Terms and Conditions).

An eligible SPG Member should check his/her account to confirm the expiration date of his/her Suite Night Awards.

Suite Night Awards may not be redeemed at certain SPG Participating Hotels or at Starwood Vacation Ownership and residential properties. Please contact the specific SPG Participating Hotel or Starwood Vacation Ownership and residential property to see if Suite Night Awards may be redeemed for a stay at that SPG Participating Hotel or Starwood Vacation Ownership and residential property.

Rooms that are eligible for Suite Night Award upgrades vary by SPG Participating Hotel. In general, a standard suite or select premium room as designated by an SPG Participating Hotel is eligible, depending on availability. Specialty suites, such as presidential, honeymoon or multiple bedroom suites, are not eligible for Suite Night Awards. In some resort locations where these room types are not available, upgraded rooms are based on preferred view, such as pool or ocean view, or room styles offered.
