Norwegian Air Shuttle offers a revenue-based loyalty programme, where you earn points as a fix percentage of the paid base fare, and redeem those points as discounts on airfare at a fix exchange rate.

Their loyalty programme has evolved from a pure cash-back type of program, to including earning/redemption partners and perks for their frequent flyers.

You can access Norwegian Rewards website here.

The airline offers their frequent flyers perks after 6 segments. The top tier, achieved with 48 segments, includes 10% extra cashpoints on all LowFare tickets, free seat assignment, checked luggage and fast track on all flights.

According to a press release (access here), Norwegian will offer fee long-haul tickets and/or upgrades to their most frecuent flyer passengers.

Norwegian Reward members who fly at least 20 round trips (40 one way flights) and have at least 3000 CashPoints earned on flight tickets by 31 December 2017 will receive a free return flight to any one of Norwegian’s 13 long-haul destinations from Gatwick.

The loyalty programme is also offering members who fly at least 10 round trips (20 one way flights) on flexible tickets in 2017 a free upgrade to Premium on any long-haul route.

To put this new perks in perspective, let’s estimate how much would it cost to obtain them: Norwegian Rewards accrual is 100% revenue-based:

A Norwegian Rewards top tier member (48 segments) obtains 12% CashPoints on LowFare tickets and 20% CashPoints on all flex tickets. This means a 15,000 € expense on flex tickets or a 25,000 € expense on LowFare tickets.

Conclusion

For a 15,000 € expense on an airline I’d expect them to roll out the red carpet for me every time I set foot on an airport, but Norwegian offers a free flight! Someone didn’t think it through when planning this promo. Who buys 15,000 € worth of full flex fares in a low cost carrier?

  • Thanks for analyzing the reward – it is indeed a pretty steep spend for a free flight or upgrade and I wouldn’t direct my spend to Norwegian for that.
But it’s still better than a sharp stick in the eye, if you are flying with them anyway. And it’s better than the skimpy rewards on other LCC like AirAsia. I had to fly for years on AirAsia before earning my first free flight – and got nothing else…
I’m cheering for any LCC adding perks to their programs… I would love for AirAsia to introduce free upgrades to their Premium Flatbed!
