Fabulous Fridays: Choice Of Elite Breakfast Benefit At The Club Lounge Or Hotel Restaurant

It’s another Fabulous Friday and this time our topic is Hotels that allow their Elite/Club guests to have breakfast by choice either at the club lounge or full restaurant buffet.

The usual benefit for hotel loyalty program elite members is ‘continental breakfast’ at the club lounge but often hotels are very generous and give the choice to also eat at the restaurant.

We have written on occasion about elaborate hotel breakfasts, sometimes ones that go far beyond the standard of the individual brand such as at the Aloft Kuala Lumpur (see my previous article here).

But properties that do have full club lounges usually try to keep eligible guests up there and in fact real good lounges such as Grand Hyatt Taipei or Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur also have a nice environment to keep your breakfast.

One example is the Grand Hyatt KL where as I mentioned the lounge is already very good, the hotel actually allows the guests to also enjoy breakfast upstairs at the restaurant.

Why is that such a good thing? Because often hotels aren’t really stellar when it comes to the breakfast at their club lounges and the Grand Hyatt Bangkok is a great example for that. When a lounge breakfast is relatively boring I often actively ask if I may eat at the restaurant or I refer to the welcome letter such as the one pictured above. Alternatively I gladly a small surcharge for the restaurant breakfast.

If your rate includes breakfast to begin with this isn’t even a problem because it’s your choice where to take it. Often companies also have negotiated rates that allow breakfast for a nominal fee.

I like when hotels give this choice to their guests. Sometimes you just like a little bite in the morning and want to glance over the daily paper in a quiet environment there are other days when you want to eat a nice big breakfast and the lounge just doesn’t cut it.

Whenever someone says to me that the club lounge is disappointing in the morning I usually recommend to ask a manager if it’s possible to have a proper breakfast in the restaurants. I’ve rarely been turned down and even if I offered to pay a surcharge for the restaurant breakfast which then took care of it.

I always appreciate it when hotels give you the option. Sometimes the Club lounge has a rather limited selection. Sometimes it gets very busy. If I’m in a hurry I prefer the Club Lounge. But there are other occasions when having a broader selection is quite welcome. And in some hotels, particularly in Asia, the breakfast selection can be quite extensive. Example, the InterContinental Hotel in Singapore. The lounge is lovely but the breakfast selection is limited; the restaurant downstairs has a broad, multicultural, selection, especially on weekends.

If a property has an affiliated/attached golf course, I ask if I can instead enjoy breakfast at the club grille. Most courses serve a very good breakfast with very nice scenery, & the front desk will often accept the charge (in lieu of the hotel restaurant or club). Is always worth asking I found (esp if the club srlection is lame).

What remarkable timing: I am staying at the MSP Airport Hilton for a meeting, and when checked in last night the front desk clerk told me that I had access to the club lounge, and also offered me breakfast tickets for the restaurant buffet. Darn glad I got those: I walked through the lounge thsi morning and the offerings were sparse. Downstairs, however, was another story: A number of options, all very fresh. Really appreciate the option of having the coupon for the restaurant buffet being offered!

Sheratons are doing a good job globally in their club lounges and usually one can also go to the buffet in the general restaurant as a SPG platinum member. My best SPG platinum breakfast experience is the Le Meridien in Paris, France, exceptional breakfast free for the family every day.

Westins do a good job outside the US but in the US it’s my worst breakfast experience as an elite member. Recently, I was offered a $10 credit, just enough to cover the tip. SPG should teach Westin properties in the US how to treat their platinum members.

just did this last week at the renaissance BKK … although their club lounge is good, i thought it would be nice to have a change this time. i asked upon check-in, and they readily agreed to let me have breakfast in the mezzanine restaurant. what a meal it was … lavish and delicious.
