Marriott Rewards has various Travel Packages redemption options where for instance you get a 7 night hotel award + a variable number of airline miles in your chosen airline for a set number of points.

In my opinion, this is the best way to use Marriott Rewards points. You get a 7 night hotel award and then can “purchase” airlines miles at ONE Marriott Rewards point per ONE mile with Package 1 airlines. [click to continue…]

Avianca LifeMiles learned (thankfully) from their previous award chart changes (unannounced and denied that there had been changes at all) and announced back in July (read here and here) their new award chart that is effective on October 15, 2014.

As I was in Panama this last week and needed to get to Cancun for this coming weekend, I decided to visit Havana. I have been here before, so just decided to stay for a few days. Please don’t get me started about the internet connectivity here.

Beyond using my LifeMiles for getting from Bangkok to Buenos Aires (access the piece here), it did not usually make any sense to use miles from Oneworld or Star Alliance programs for travel within South/Central America. Late last week, I was researching award and paid ticket options from Bangkok to Buenos Aires for the middle of this week, as I wanted to get to South America by Thursday night.

Avianca LifeMiles BKK-JNB-GRU-EZE

The paid economy class one-way tickets were in the $1,600 to $1,800 range unless I would have hopped to Ho Chi Minh City first and then took a flight to Sao Paulo (this would have required an additional ticket to Buenos Aires) and business class ones were much more. [click to continue…]
