This was the weirdest announcement that I read last week. Marriott decided to start using Booking.com to handle all the reservations that are done via their Brazilian website at Marriott.com.br.

Have you ever wondered what is going on with hotel prices? Everyone is advertising that they have the lowest prices on their website, but the prices are exactly the same to the penny? This is called “rate parity” that companies such as InterContinental Hotels Group has required its OTA (Online Travel Agents) partners to adhere.

The Office of the Fair Trading (OFT) in the UK has been investigating this issue and has just released a preliminary report. Have you been booking a lot with Booking.com? If you have, you likely received an email from them in the past week offering 10% discount at many of the hotels for being a Booking.com genius. The extra discount is valid until November 15, 2013.

Yesterday, I was researching accommodation options for Padangbai in Bali for the night. Checked TripAdvisor and decided to book one hotel on Expedia. The property descriptions are usually far better on Booking.com and decided to check it to see if the hotel has property wide wifi. Found that the hotel on Booking.com was 22 cents lower, when all the taxes/fees were factored in.

I have used Expedia quite a lot, but mainly for airline tickets. As the hotel reservations booked on Expedia are not eligible for night/stay credits and points, I tend to book hotels on their own websites. As there are no chains hotels in Padangbai. I could well use Expedia and put their Best Price Guarantee to test. [click to continue…]
