Financial Times: Booking.com in European settlement over hotel prices

When I was reading Financial Times on a British Airways flight last night, there was interesting article about Booking.com reaching an agreement with French, Italian and Swedish authorities regarding price fixing.

Financial Times Booking.com in European settlement over hotel prices

The European online booking giant that is owned by Priceline had required hotels to fix their prices so that Booking.com always had lowest prices on its website. The new settlement allows hotels to offer lower prices on other third party sites and over the phone, but not on their own websites. This doesn’t make much sense.

Booking.com and Expedia has agreed to something called “price parity” meaning that they would not undercut IHG’s own pricing of hotels.

Marriott’s Brazil Website Becomes “Powered” By Booking.com

This was the weirdest announcement that I read last week. Marriott decided to start using Booking.com to handle all the reservations that are done via their Brazilian website at Marriott.com.br.

“Weston, FL – Reflecting Marriott International’s (NYSE:MAR) increasing focus on global markets, the company announced today the improvement of its Brazilian booking website, www.marriott.com.br, in a partnership with Booking.com, (www.booking.com) to allow guests in that country to make their reservations in local currency online or on their mobile devices (m.marriott.com.br).

InterContinental Hotels Group, Expedia & Booking.com Accused Of Price Fixing

Have you ever wondered what is going on with hotel prices? Everyone is advertising that they have the lowest prices on their website, but the prices are exactly the same to the penny? This is called “rate parity” that companies such as InterContinental Hotels Group has required its OTA (Online Travel Agents) partners to adhere.

The Office of the Fair Trading (OFT) in the UK has been investigating this issue and has just released a preliminary report. They are also soliciting comments from companies and individuals about this practice. You can read more about this on BBC’s website here and on OFT’s website here.

Booking.com Genius Award

Have you been booking a lot with Booking.com? If you have, you likely received an email from them in the past week offering 10% discount at many of the hotels for being a Booking.com genius. The extra discount is valid until November 15, 2013.

LoyaltyLobby reader send me an email that he had received from Booking.com. Apparently, there are quite a few hotels that are offering this 10% discount, but some of the chain hotels are excluded.

Expedia Best Price Guarantee: Case Booking.com Lower By 22 Cents

Yesterday, I was researching accommodation options for Padangbai in Bali for the night. Checked TripAdvisor and decided to book one hotel on Expedia. The property descriptions are usually far better on Booking.com and decided to check it to see if the hotel has property wide wifi. Found that the hotel on Booking.com was 22 cents lower, when all the taxes/fees were factored in.

I have used Expedia quite a lot, but mainly for airline tickets. As the hotel reservations booked on Expedia are not eligible for night/stay credits and points, I tend to book hotels on their own websites. As there are no chains hotels in Padangbai. I could well use Expedia and put their Best Price Guarantee to test.
