Etihad has been sending these offers couple of times this year. I wrote about similar offer this spring that had really short validity period. This time the offer that Etihad emailed to me makes more sense. They are offering double miles for business class and triple for first class between October 16 and November 26, 2012.

etihad-guest-double-triple

Note that these offers are targeted. They seem to send them out if you haven’t flown Etihad in business or first class, or there has been a lapse in activity.

If you are planning to fly Etihad in paid business or first class, it might make sense to sign up for the Etihad’s frequent flier program and hope that they send you one of these offers as well.

Conclusion

This is a timely offer for me. I have been contemplating of buying a business class fare for later this month and getting some extra miles never hurts. I did a status match for Gold status on Etihad’s Guest program earlier this year.

Here are the terms and conditions of this targeted offer:

This offer is exclusive to a select segment of Etihad Guests, and is available by invitation only. Bonus Miles Promotion is valid for all bookings made between 15 October and 26 November 2012 for travel between 16 October and 27 November 2012. The bonus miles earned will depend on the fare class booked. The bonus miles will be offered only on Etihad operated flights and does not include redemption flights. The bonus miles will be credited for every eligible flight flown during the promotion period. The bonus miles earned will be Etihad Guest Miles and not Tier Miles. Members only earn bonus base miles and class bonus miles. The bonus miles will be credited at the end of the promotion period. This promotion is not valid for travel to Ahmedabad.

The news that broke before the announcement of Qatar joining the oneworld alliance was the agreement between Etihad and Air France-KLM about strategic codesharing partnership that will take place.

air-france-klm-etihad-airberlin

Air France and KLM will codeshare to certain destinations operated by Etihad via Doha. Etihad will codeshare to some European destinations operated by Air France and KLM. Airberlin will codeshare also with Air France and KLM.

Airberlin is oneworld member airline and both Air France and KLM are members of the competing SkyTeam. Etihad owns part of airberlin and has provided loans to the airline. It is on Etihad’s best interest to ensure that airberlin is successful and stops losing money.

The website airlineroute.net, which specializes to airline route news, posted the following route/codesharing update about Air France, KLM, Etihad and airberlin yesterday:

AIRFRANCE operated by ETIHAD
Abu Dhabi – Colombo
Abu Dhabi – Dhaka
Abu Dhabi – Kathmandu
Abu Dhabi – Male
Abu Dhabi – Paris CDG
Abu Dhabi – Seychelles

KLM operated by ETIHAD

airberlin operated by AIRFRANCE
Paris CDG – Bordeaux

Paris CDG – Montpellier
Paris CDG – Nantes
Paris CDG – Nice
Paris CDG – Toulouse

Berlin Tegel – Kaliningrad
Berlin Tegel – Kaliningrad
Berlin Tegel – Krakow

airberlin operated by KLM
All KL Netherlands – Germany Routes
Amsterdam – Edinburgh
Amsterdam – Glasgow

At first look the number of destinations that the airlines codeshare isn’t that great. Air France still has a codeshare agreement in place with Qantas regarding Australia. but Qantas has announced that it will drop it due to the agreement between Qantas and Emirates. Maybe Air France-KLM will tunnel their Australian traffic via Abu Dhabi on Etihad in the future?

The situation with the airberlin is just weird. The airline just officially joined the oneworld alliance earlier this year and was sponsored by British Airways. Now, the airline starts codesharing agreement with Air France & KLM that are both part of the SkyTeam alliance.

Conclusion

This is interesting development and might skew Etihad to join SkyTeam at some point in the future. These codeshare agreements aren’t that beneficial for the consumers unless the airlines are going to form a deeper partnerships and start honoring each other’s frequent flier benefits as well.

Etihad also has a codesharing agreement with American Airlines. Both airlines’ frequent fliers can redeem miles on each others flights.

Starwood and Etihad Airways announced their new partnership back in June. They both had dedicated pages and websites up about the ability to earn Etihad miles on Starwood stays and about the transfer option of Starpoints to miles. Unfortunately, the actual functionality was not up at that time.

starwood-etihad

Now, you can easily transfer Starpoints to Etihad miles. You just need to log into your SPG account and choose the option of transferring points to airline miles.

spg-ey

You can top up your Etihad account so that you can issue an award. For elite SPG Platinum members there is no minimum transfer requirement. I have few times transferred just couple of points to qualify certain partner promotion and/or hit the number of required miles to issue an award.

spg-ey-transfer

If you need to transfer more miles, it is best done in the blocks of 20K Starpoints that always get a 5K miles transfer bonus. Your 20K SPG points will turn to 25K Etihad miles.

There is currently a great offer until the end of this year for Qatar Airways and Etihad Airways frequent fliers (free to join). You can get 50% off of the Hyatt Daily Rate. This is the lowest rate that I have seen for this property after they stopped accepting the Hyatt stay certificates.

I visited this beautiful property back in August and wrote a piece about it, as I also did about the Male city. I also did a piece how to get a great deal using those now discontinued stay certificates or points packages that include dinner as well.

park-hyatt-maldives-daily-rate

The rates using the Qatar Airways and the promotional code PHMQA are same as the rate using the Etihad code. Note that the Qatar offer is set to end on November 30th, 2012. Who knows whether it will be extended? The rate rules that you can find on Qatar’s web page for this offer are bit different than those on Hyatt.com under rate rules for this rate plan. You can also earn double Qmiles, although I would recommend collecting Hyatt Gold Passport points instead.

park-hyatt-maldives-qatar-airways

For the Etihad offer you need to use promotional code PHMEY1. This offer has the same rates as the Qatar one, but is valid until the end of the year.

park-hyatt-maldives-etihad-airways

Both of these offer exceptional value for Park Hyatt Maldives. Of course getting to Maldives is bit pricey and you need to fork some cash for the internal flights as well. But it is most definitely worth it.

Here are the rate details for both offers

Qatar Airways

Rate Description:
Reduced rate for Qatar Airlines Loyalty Card holders:Tax Excluded: -Booking window: 01MAR12-01MAY12 -Stay dates: 15MAR12-30NOV12 -Guest must present Qatar Airlines Loyalty Card upon check in and choose miles for their stay.

Etihad Airways

Rate Description:
ETIHAD AIRLINES SPECIAL OFFER Reduced Rate:Tax Excluded: GUEST MUST CHOOSE MILES FOR THEIR STAY AND PROVIDE VALID ETIHAD LOYALTY CARD UPON CHECK-IN. – Valid 07DEC11-31DEC12

The additional charges are same for both:

Additional Charges:
6.000 Percent tax
10.000 Percent service charge
Bed Tax: 8 United States Dollars Per Person Per Night USD Other Charges   Cancellation Policy:
Cancel 2-14day 100percent Within 2 Days Full Penalty

Back in April Etihad extended a status match offer for Gold status on their Etihad Guest program for Gold or higher status members from competing programs.

I sent Etihad a copy of my Skywards Gold card and account statement from Emirates that showed quite a few flights in first class and few in business as well. About a month later, I received a reply from Etihad that they were processing the matches and that I should hear soon.

etihad-tier-match-reply

There was no other communication from Etihad, but when I was checking my account online the status had been upgraded to Gold and a card dispatched last week. Part of this offer was triple miles for business and quadruple for first class.

etihad-gold-status

etihad-gold-card-dispatch

I have to say that I am not too impressed how long it took Etihad to process a status match that they were offering in the first place. If you run a status match campaign, you should have procedures in place to ensure that they get processed swiftly. I did a status match recently with both SAS and Alaska. In both instances the match was done and approved within couple of days.

Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, is the Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) latest airline partner. It is always great to have more airlines partnering with Starwood as it is very convenient to transfer Starpoints to airline miles to top up accounts for awards.

starwood-etihad

Etihad sent an email couple of days ago about this partnership and SPG already has earnyourdreams.com/etihad website up for double, triple or 3000 extra miles depending of the upgraded accommodations your book in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa.

starwood-etihad-earnyourdreams

According to the email, you could already transfer Starpoints to Etihad Guest miles, but this is not the case. The airline doesn’t yet appear on the partner list.

Hyatt has teamed up with number of airlines; Air China, Air France-KLM, ANA, American Airlines, British Airways, China Eastern, Delta Air Lines, Etihad, Lufthansa, Qatar, Southwest, and United to offer up to five times the miles or points.

hyatt-summer-promo

This promotion starts on May 1st and end of August 30th, 2012. You will receive the normal number of miles or points for the first stay, triple bonus for stays 2 and 3, and quadruple miles or points for the stays 4 to 11.

hyatt-united

Please note that this promotion is NOT based on nights but rather on stays. You will receive the same number of miles or points regardless how many nights you stay. The promotion is capped at 11 stays.

The cumulative maximum number of points that you would earn by having 11 stays on Air China’s and China Eastern’s programs would be 39200. By crediting 11 stays to Southwest’s Rapid Rewards would earn you 29400 points. In all other programs the cumulative number of points after 11 stays would be the grand total of 24500 miles/points.

This promotion quite frankly works for me. Most of my stays are for one night. Getting 2500 miles for a one night stay is a rather good deal. Maybe I will finally set my foot to Hyatt property this year.

HOW TO REGISTER: Between April 1, 2012 and August 31, 2012 (“Promotion Period”), you can register for Promotion via hyatt.com/UNITEDSUM12A or by calling 1-800-228-3360 and requesting enrollment code UA12S. Last year, I credited bunch of business class flights that I took on Sri Lankan to Etihad. There weren’t any better choice for them. I didn’t want to credit them to Sri Lankan’s own frequent flyer program due to lack of partners. I also applied to the recent Etihad Guest Gold status match offer, but I haven’t heard back from that program yet.

etihad-email-double-triple-miles

Earlier today April 21st, I received a targeted email offer to try Etihad’s Coral Business class or Diamond First class product, and to receive double miles for business or triple miles for first class.

I just couldn’t get my head around this offer because of the dates. This offer is valid for bookings made and flights flown between April 19th and May 3rd, 2012. Of course two days had already passed from the promotional period by the time they managed to send out the emails leaving less than two weeks’ time to take advantage of said offer.

Emirates has run quite a few similar offers in the past, but normally they require ticketing let’s say in March and for travel in April or May. I could take advantage of such offers. I cannot, however, take advantage of some offer from Etihad that is valid for the next 12 days.

Etihad, the national & smaller global airline out from UAE, has launched a status match campaign that is limited to first 1000 participants. Etihad is matching other airlines’ Gold members or higher to Etihad Guest Gold. This offer is valid until April 26th or when participant quota has been reached.

etihad-guest-go-for-gold

Last week Etihad announced some not so good changes for its Etihad Guest frequent flier program. Unless you are flying full fare business or first class, the number of miles you will earn will go down.

The requirements of this status match campaign are very straightforward. You only need to email a copy of the frequent flier card and the miles statement to tiermatchuae@etihad.ae along with your Etihad Guest frequent flier number.

etihad-special-offer-triple-quadruple

There is also an offer of triple miles for business class and quadruple miles for first class for program participants. The details of this bonus offer are somewhat unclear. Apparently, they will send more detailed information for those that are matched to Gold.

I just applied for the tier match myself as I have been thinking of taking some Etihad operated flights in the not so distant future. I qualified for the Emirates Skywards Gold the other week, but haven’t received a new card yet. At least on the Emirates’ website you can just print a copy of the card. Then I printed out also my latest account statement as a PDF file, and sent a short email to the address above with my guest number and the two files as an attachment.  We’ll see how long it takes for Etihad to update my status to Gold. Based on my previous correspondence with Etihad over the email they have been able to react rather fast.

Whenever you receive an email from an airline or hotel program that has a title “Changes to the Etihad Guest programme”, you can be 100% certain that there is no good news. This was the case with the Etihad as well. Under this ”enhancement” you are only better if you fly on full fare business or first class. Vast majority of flyers on discounted economy will earn only half what they used to.

ey-email

Basically, they are moving to the same six tier system that Emirates has been using for a while. The only difference is that Emirates uses zones to determine the number of earned miles where Etihad uses actual flown milesetihad-new-base-earnings

You have different number of miles earner for:

– Discounted Economy 50% (E, U, V, L, Q, M, K)

– Economy 100% (H, B, Y)

– Discounted Business 130% (W, D)

– Business 175% (C, J)

– Discounted First 180% (R)

– First 250% (A, F)

Unless you are flying in on full fare economy, business, or first class, you will earn less miles after this change on June 1st than before. To be frank, Etihad’s program has been generous giving full miles for discounted economy as well, but I think that it has to do of being an underdog compared to the neighboring Emirates out of Dubai.

ey-auh-lhr-new

You will still earn the same TIER MILES or TIER SEGMENTS that are used to determine the status with Etihad’s program. You will get the “base” miles at economy or 1 tier segment, 50% bonus for business or 2 tier segments, and 100% bonus for first or 3 tier segments. You can qualify for the status either by tier miles or segments.

ey-auh-lhr-old

As you can see from the Etihad’s charts above, the only times the new chart is better is when you are flying in full fare business or first. In all other cases the number of miles earned is lower than previously

This past fall I had quite a few flights on SriLankan and Qatar, but wasn’t quite sure where I would credit them. For me it just didn’t make sense to credit SriLankan flights to their own frequent flyer program, but I wasn’t as sure what I would do with the Qatar flights. I would have come to very close qualifying to a Gold status with Qatar’s Privilege Club due to double elite qualifying miles offer they had during some of my flights.

etihad-retroclaims

At the end I decided to credit the Qatar flights to US Airways’ Dividend Miles, and the SriLankan flights to Etihad’s Guest frequent flyer program. US Airways required the boarding passes and the receipt to be mailed to their address in Arizona. Etihad was happy enough to credit the miles if I would just email the copy of the receipt and all the boarding passes I had. I thought that this process would take weeks and several phone calls before getting these retro credits processed.

To my surprise the miles from SriLankan flights were on my Etihad account in less than a week. Unfortunately I don’t know exactly how long it took for them to credit as I never received any email communication from them.

us-airways-retrocredit

US Airways and the postal system worked very well as well. I mailed the boarding passes and the accompanied letter by register mail from Finland on Friday. The following Thursday I received an email from US Airways Dividend Miles service center that they had processed the mileage credit for the Qatar flights that I took.

Have to thank both airlines to have have procedures in place to get these processed so fast. As I posted above, I really thought that this process would take several weeks.

Passengers flying on Etihad (EY), the national airline of United Arab Emirates based in Abu Dhabi, have already been able to credit their flights to American Airlines AAdvantage program, with few exclusions, for some time.  Etihad flights booked on American Airlines flight numbers are also eligible for EQM’s and extra RDM’s. Flights booked entirely on Etihad flight numbers are not eligible for EQM’s.

American Airlines Etihad Earnings StructureNow, passengers are also able to redeem their American Airlines AAdvantage frequent flier miles on Etihad and vice versa. [click to continue…]
