I had one partially used United award ticket from last year (read more here) and had them to rebook me on ANA’s 787 (SIN-NRT), EVA Air’s NRT-TPE-HKG & TG A380’s (HKG-BKK). I had not flown on EVA or Boeing 787 previously. I have had quite a few flights on Emirates A380 in both business and first, but not on TG’s.

I knew that EVA has some Hello Kitty flights and checked out the dedicated website the airline has set up for them. But I didn’t think too much about it, as there are only very few flights that has this Hello Kitty theme. [click to continue…]

In anticipation to EVA Air’s joining the Star Alliance on 18th of this month, Star Alliance briefly posted the information about mapping the EVA’s membership levels to alliance wide Star Alliance Silver and Gold status.

Star Alliance has not yet officially announced the joining date of the EVA Air to the alliance, but EVA’s inflight magazine for June has it for 18th of this month. EVA Air and Star Alliance signed an agreement on 2012 that the airline would join the alliance on 2nd quarter of 2013.

This would mean that starting on 18th of June the Star Alliance wide Silver and Gold benefits would apply on EVA flights as well and EVA’s frequent fliers would receive the same benefits on other Star Alliance airlines. [click to continue…]

EVA and Star Alliance will sign an agreement in Taipei 29th of March for the airline to join the alliance in about 12 months’ time. The carrier is expected to join the alliance in 2013 after meeting all the entry requirements. The bigger Taiwanese carrier China Airlines joined the rival alliance SkyTeam.

Ethiopian Airlines joined the Star Alliance in 2011 and Avianca/TACA and Copa are both expected to join the alliance shortly.

EVA operates to four destinations in Europe of which three are operated via Bangkok. Only the Paris route is direct.  In the Americas the airline has non-stop service to Vancouver, Seattle, Francisco, Los Angeles, Toronto, and New York. Obviously the carrier has extensive network to China, North and Southeast Asia. The only destination served in Australia is Brisbane.

Taiwan is a natural connecting point from traffic coming from Americas and continuing to Southeast Asia and China.

Taipei is a very interesting and modern city to visit for a long weekend. I have been there couple of times. My plan is to travel, schedule permitting, to other cities around the island as well to see the more traditional Taiwan.
