Just received an email from Hilton earlier today advertising the ability to use Hilton HHonors points for some SeaWorld tickets.

It seems that Hilton has partnered with Rewards Network, and offering gift cards at a very bad value. They also have some crappy items in exchange for Hilton HHonors points.

All the gift cards are for 50K Hilton HHonors points for a $100 gift cards. You can often buy restaurants gift cards at 20% discount of the face value. So if you are converting your Hilton HHonors points for gift cards, the value is one fifth of a cent – $0.002. I am sure that the value is even lower if you decided to “buy” any of the crappy items they have on their site.

So my advice would be NOT to bother with this offer at all.

Auckland is often overlooked city. People tend to use it only for getting to other parts of New Zealand or to some of the pacific islands. I have visited Auckland few times on my travels. It is nice city to break your journey for couple of days. Previously, I have always stayed at the Hyatt property, but the property was recently reflagged as a Pullman part of the Accor chain.

I had never been to the Hilton hotel in Auckland besides having a drink at the bar. Decided to burn one of the free night certificates from the recent Hilton promo. The paid rates were rather high as they usually are for this property.

Getting to the hotel from the airport

The best way if you have plenty of luggage and more than one person is probably take a cab. It should cost around 90 NZD. As I was just traveling with my carry on and I had never tried the very frequent airport bus before, decided that now it was the time. Bought a ticket to the bus using a credit card for 16 NZD. The schedule is very frequent – every ten minutes or so. The last stop, which is the ferry building, is less than a ten minute walk from the hotel. Not difficult at all. There are only about five six stops altogether.

Check in

The check in wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t perfect either. I was told that I had been upgraded to a some sort of sea view room. I inquired if a suite upgrade would be possible as I was only staying for the night and would leave rather early the following morning. The clerk told that they have only one suite available and offered it to me as a upsell. I asked if he was aware of the changes to the Hilton HHonors Diamond program on January 18th that would bring the suites also to the pool of possible Diamond upgrades. He went away to the backroom and came back with the positive news. He probably had a word with a rooms controller or manager on duty.

The Relaxation Suite 705

This was a beautiful corner suite on the 7th floor with a wide open view of the Auckland harbor. There was couple of sun chairs on the balcony where you could have relaxed a bit. The only problem with this suite was that there was very little privacy unless you closed the curtains. Also, somebody staying in the next door could have easily “jumped” to your balcony. There was really nothing preventing it.

I think that the style of this suite was “fresh”. I could say almost Scandinavian. The furniture wasn’t heavy. The only think I didn’t like was the rather generic looking bathroom. I also think that they should have higher quality bathroom amenities in their suites.

Fitness center & Pool

The pool itself is very tiny and in an urban atmosphere. Not sure how long and when you get sunlight there. There is a sundeck as well with some chairs around. This is not a right hotel if you like to spend time by the pool, however.

Fitness center was rather compact but could well work for a hotel of this size. I had a nice workout there in the evening.

Breakfast

I was still in a very different time zone and went to breakfast only 10 to 15 minutes later after the restaurant had opened. They were still setting up the displays.

The breakfast spread was one of the better ones that I have come across in the Hilton chain sans few properties in Thailand. You had an egg stations, cold cuts, fruits, hot items etc.

The breakfast was complimentary and I didn’t have to sign anything. I did the waiter my suite number. They probably have a list of guests that have complimentary breakfast included with their rooms.

Conclusion

This is a fine Hilton hotel and I loved the view from the balcony. Depending what you are going to do in Auckland the location may or may not work for you. For my purpose of spending there 0 hours to relax between flights it did work perfectly. If you are Diamond member and have not been upgraded prior to your checking in, it might be worthwhile to ask what they have available.

Today British Airways included the following offer with their Executive Club February update. You can also combine this offer with other Hilton points based promotions.

Not sure if Hilton has made a typo here. They are claiming to offer 750 Avios based points for fixed miles earners, but if you look at the earnings chart it is actually only 500 Avios points. I have requested clarification from Hilton for this. It seems to be clear, however, based on the Terms and conditions that the bonus amount is 1500 Avios points.

It might make more sense to credit stays longer than two days and/or lower earnings Hilton brands to BMI. You could get 1000 BMI Diamond Club miles per night up to three nights. British Airways is in the process of buying BMI, and Diamond Club will most likely merge with British Airways’ Executive Club turning BMI miles into Avios.

Couple of hours ago I was looking at various hotel options for tonight in Nadi (Fiji). I was still in Auckland, but had to make a decision where to stay for the first night.

I knew that I was going to stay at the Hilton for a night during my week-long stay on the island. The paid rates were in the $270 to $300 range including taxes (418 FJD ++). I still had six free night certificates left from a recent promo, but it would have been a waste to use at Hilton Fiji when their point rates starts just at 35K per night, that is low for a Hilton.

Normally these premium room & points and money rewards don’t make too much sense. I was surprised, however, that the rate for Hilton Fiji was 17500 HH + 110 FJD per night. I value HH maybe around half of a cent and 110 FJD is $63. My “cost” thus would be $150. Of course you would need to take into account the number of points and BD miles that I would have earned by paying the $300 rate. But, I consider this to be a fair deal.

I have a hunch what is happening here. When hotel chains calculate the category for a hotel it is normally based on the ADR (average daily rate). Hilton Fiji is probably dumping a lot of inventory through consolidators and package gravel agencies to bring the ADR far lower than the rate displayed on Hilton.com.

This was my first Hilton hotels stay for a while that wasn’t satisfactory. Part of the reason might be that I can get easily cranky when coming off from a long flight and things quite doesn’t work out.

Problems that I encountered at the Narita Hilton:

1. When I book an airport hotel I expect that a hotel runs an airport shuttle more often than once an hour. During the day Hilton’s shuttle bus only runs very limited schedule that is borderline useless. Who wants to wait 50+ minutes for a hotel shuttle?

2. No Bellman working at the entrance for helping with the bags.

3. Front desk had a very limited understanding of the English language.

4. Apparently no upgrade, although upgradeable rooms were available at Hilton.com.

5. Front desk refused to reimburse the 2000 yean taxi costs from the airport that I requested due to borderline nonexistent bus schedule.

6. Requested to speak with the GM that didn’t happen.

7. Apparently was given a key to the wrong room first. The front desk staff was running after me when I got to the 10th floor. Then the key didn’t work on the room on the 11th floor.

8. No wireless internet at the rooms and had problems with the wired connection. Wired problem was solved when a new router was brought in.

And no, I don’t believe that the hotel really is this bad. What I have learned from my yearly 300+ hotel stays from 2004 is that when things starts going wrong everything just escalates. When the arrival experience is subpar it starts to define the entire stay unless hotel proactively “corrects” things, which Hilton Narita didn’t do.

The price that I got the hotel at the Hilton.com was an AAA rate of 8700 yens. I think that the price was fair. When I was trying to find the name of the hotel GM, I came across their Facebook promo. If you like the hotel on their Facebook page, you are eligible for a rate of 5000 yen and like 5 discount coupons. I made the second booking, while I was already checked in at the hotel, and just notated on the comment section that I would like to switch my AAA rate to this promotional rate. My rate had been changed before checking out to this promotion without any further interaction from my part. Also the hotel had slipped in under the door the discount coupons associated with this promotion.

The Room

The room I had fairly normal sized but was starting to look dated, although it had been maintained well. It took some time for me to figure out how to turn out all the lights. It wasn’t very intuitive. The room I had faced the Narita airport.

Fitness Center

Fitness center was open 24 hours a day. During the night hours you could access it through alternate entry. When I went there 5:30AM there was already more than ten people. When I looked at the sign in sheet, everybody else was a crew member. Apparently this hotel is mainly used for airline crews that is not surprising considering the proximity to the airport.

Breakfast

The breakfast was served at their main buffet. The selection was fine, although not very extensive.

Conclusion

Overall, I wouldn’t mind staying there again, if the price is right, even considering the flaws I had during my stay. They must do some work with the hotel soon. It is starting to look somewhat dated.

It took some time for Hilton to start sending emails about the new Diamond member benefits that started on January 18th. Emails are just going out so no need to worry if you haven’t received yours. You can visit the Hilton’s page devoted to these changes following this link.

Here is the recap of the changes for Diamond members:

1. There are no changes for Diamond members staying at Embassy Suites, Hilton Garden Inn’s, Hampton Inn & Suites, Homewood Suites, Home2 Suites, and Hilton Grand Vacation Locations.

2. Previously Diamond member had to choose between the MyWay 1000 extra bonus points in lieu for breakfast/upgrade. This is no longer the case. You will automatically receive the upgrade + breakfast + 1000 bonus points at Waldorf Astoria (no breakfast benefit), Conrad, DoubleTree, and Hilton hotels.

3. Now the upgrade pool also includes SUITES that before were excluded. This applies for Waldorf Astoria, Conrad, DoubleTree and Hilton properties. At the same time the upgraded rooms are no longer just executive rooms but view and other lower category rooms as well.

4. Executive Lounge access is no a guaranteed benefit of Diamond status.

We’ll need to see how these changes work through all the hotels. Personally I am most excited about the possible suite upgrades. At least it is now explicitly stated that suites are fair game for Diamond members.

My friends always think that I would complain a lot about hotels, but that is really not the case. Last year I had more than 300 hotel stays at Hilton, Hyatt, InterContinental, Marriott, and Starwood hotels. Of these 300 stays only three were “disastrous” enough to warrant a written complaint; St Regis, W, and Ritz-Carlton hotel.

I have thought about it few times – the higher the perceived quality of the hotel, the more chances they have not to meet your expectations. Not sure if I have ever complained about the physical condition of the hotel. You can always fix/update the rooms, but getting the soft product (service) right is more complicated than that. Especially, when you are staying at “affordable” luxury hotels, they shouldn’t promise you more than what they can deliver. This is usually the reason for discontent.

Normally, I try to resolve any issues I have on the spot. Calling the operator and asking them to connect you to the Manager on Duty, is most of the time enough to get any stay related issues corrected while you are still at the property.  But, when you have many issues going wrong with your stay, then it might be worthwhile to write-up a letter to let the property and possible the franchisor know about the issues you have had. This is also another chance for them to make it right i.e. offer you compensation (read points).

If I have had a bad stay, I never write the letter immediately. It is better to let the things settle and not to write anything when you are “emotional”. I just write down the issues I have had on a notepad and revisit them a week or two later.

The structure of the complaint

– Your name and address

– The confirmation number

– Your account number with the hotels loyalty program

– The date(s) of your stay

First paragraph: I normally include some information about the number of hotel stays I have had and statuses, if any, I have with the hotel loyalty programs.

Second paragraph: There is always something positive about the stay as well. I always start with the things that I liked about the hotel.

And then the complaint part. I always try to be as short as possible and straight to the facts. I tend to use points to make it clearer. One or maximum two lines per issue or problem.

Third paragraph: If you know what would be your preferred resolution for the complaint, don’t hesitate to communicate it. I normally request points in the hotels loyalty program.

Fourth paragraph: Just closing the letter and thanking them.

Where to send the complaint?

With the chain hotels, like the ones I listed above, there are always two ways. You can send it to the attention of the General Manager of the property in question, or you can send it to the corporate who will delegate it to the property. I tend to send it to the corporate because then it gets to the attention of the person at the property who deals with issues like this.

How to send it?

With Starwood, InterContinental Hotels Group, Hilton, and Marriott you can just send it by email. I don’t like using web forms for issues like these that Hyatt requires, so I just fax it to the Hyatt customer service department.

How long to wait for a reply?

I would say that hotels are typically very fast at resolving any issues raised post stay. You should hear back from the property itself, or the guest relations department of the loyalty program, in just a few days.

Conclusion

I really don’t like the word “complaint” at all. Think of it as giving feedback to the property about the issues that they should be looking more into. Business are generally happy when you give them the opportunity to make things right. Also, there must be quite a few guests that have come across the same issues, but who have never taken the time to give feedback.

Two days ago I wrote about my experience with Etihad and US Airways when it came to retrocrediting some flights that I had taken.  In the past month I have had a need to contact Marriott, Hilton, and Continental by email to fix few things.

If I don’t have an urgent thing to solve, I prefer sending an email. This way I have proof and the company can also better manage their workflows. Also, if the reply is by email and you have competent people replying to them, it doesn’t really matter where the function is located.

With Continental I had canceled one award flight, but the miles or the taxes/fees hadn’t been credited back to my account. I wrote an email/replied on their web form on December 20th to find what was going on.  The reply from Continental was received on January 26th. That is 37 days later after the inquiry was initiated. I happen to be a Platinum member with Continental. I was wondering how long it would take for a general member to get a reply out of this airline?

Please accept our apology for the delay in responding to your email; the busy travel season has led to an increase in the number of incoming e-mails and our response time is longer than average.

There had been few issues with Marriott.  Couple of properties that I had had problems with, and some points that hadn’t posted correctly. I try not to do a laundry list, but these issues were from the past seven months, and I hadn’t had time to fix them earlier. Sent an email with some attachment to Marriott Concierge on 21st and received a reply on 24th that they were looking what they could do. My email to them was sent on Saturday, and apparently the whole Marriott Rewards center is closed on Sunday so getting back on Tuesday was understandable.

But, I am still amazed how fast Hilton manages to reply to their Diamond members. I had a question regarding a promotion that they run with Emirates. I sent an email to Diamond desk at 11:57PM on 20th and the reply came on 21st at 3:25AM. The turnaround time was less than three and a half hours.

Continental should really look into how they manage the replies to email/web form inquiries. 37 days is nowhere near being acceptable. United has always been rather good at replying to complaints/comments sent to them as 1K. The reply is almost always received within a day or two. The Hilton example above is not an anomaly. Hilton has always been very good at replying to email inquiries and doing that fast. I am not as satisfied, however, with the quality of their Diamond phone line. It doesn’t really matter if the issues can be solved lightning fast by email. Marriott as a global hotel chain really should adopt better opening hours of their corporate customer care.

Last week, I wrote about the possible positive changes coming to the Hilton HHonors program. Hilton still hasn’t announced them, but they have now changed the Terms and conditions of the Diamond benefits on the website.

The changes are pretty much what I wrote earlier:

1. The language now also includes suites when they describe possible upgrades for Diamond members, although not as strongly as I would have preferred:

Diamond HHonors guests will receive upgrades to preferred rooms, based on availability for the entire stay at the time of check-in. Upgrades for Diamond HHonors guests may include the next-best available room from the room type booked. Upgrades may also be rooms with desirable views, corner rooms, rooms on high floors, rooms with special amenities, rooms on Executive Floors**, or suites, as identified by each property. Some exclusions based on rate and room type may apply.

Then it continues:

Upgrades exclude executive suites, villas and specialty accommodations, subject to the discretion of the hotel.

2. You no longer have to choose between upgrades/breakfast or 1000 bonus points. You will receive the 1000 bonus points nonetheless.  On Waldorf-Astoria’s you can choose between two options out of three of which one is the bonus points. The breakfast is still not complimentary at Waldorf-Astoria locations, however.

Overall, these are definitely positive enhancements to the program. We’ll see how adding the suites to the pool of possible upgrades for Diamond members will play out at the end. UPDATE: Please note that Hilton confirmed that both the ANA and Emirates offers are valid at all Hilton family of hotels. There are no restrictions.

Hilton is slowly releasing all airline related bonus promotions for the first quarter. I have already written about the promotion with Delta for 2012 bonus SkyMiles for stays or two days or longer. The beauty of this promotion with Delta is that all the Hilton family of hotels are participating. Also, I wrote last week about triple miles with US Airways Dividend miles, and double miles with Air Canada’s Aeroplan, American’s AAdvantage and Lufthansa’s Miles & More.

Now, there is also a promotion with Emirates for double Skywards miles for your stays until March 31st. But, I would actually call this triple miles offer, as you will get 1000 bonus Skywards miles per stay in addition to the 500 base miles.  There is a small print that this would only be valid at participating properties, but no properties listed.  I have requested further clarification from Hilton, and will update this post once I have heard back from them. Please note that you need to register for this promotion prior to your stay at http://www.hiltonhhonors.com/doubleskywards.

Also, not sure how they calculate the triple miles. If they would follow the Emirates example above, it would be 1500 ANA Mileage Club miles in addition to the 500 base miles. I doubt that this is the case, however. You will most likely receive the base miles (500) and the “triple” miles (1000) to triple the total earning per stay to 1500. Please note that you earnings are dependent of the Hilton brand. The full service brands will receive the above miles, but the lower end ones will not. There are three other ongoing promotions that you can combine with these. The other promotions are Resort Escapes for free night certificatesMore Points for extra points, and Visa Infinite promotion for instant Gold status and 40K HH after four stays.

Both of these are good offers if you are collecting ANA or Emirates miles. My favorite still is BMI’s Diamond Club, however. You will receive 1000 miles per night up to three nights regardless of the Hilton brand stayed at. This is valid year around. Lufthansa is in the process of selling BMI to AIG, the parent of British Airways, and the deal is expected to close late in the first quarter.

Please note that this change is not yet officially announced by Hilton and there might be some changes, although this enhanced program is due to debut next month. Last week, I wrote about possible changes in the Starwood’s Preferred Guest program.

These new planned changes would only apply to Waldorf-Astoria, Conrad, Hilton and DoubleTree properties. The benefits would stay same as before at Embassy Suites, Hilton Garden Inn, Hampton Inn, Homewood Suites, Home2, and Hilton Grand Vacations locations.

The planned new benefits would be:

– Space available upgrades would be available for Gold/Diamond members

– Diamond members would be eligible for suite upgrades

– Diamond members would receive the MyWay selections except at Waldorf-Astoria’s

Overall, I would welcome this change. These all three would be in addition to your selected MyWay preferences. At the moment one can choose between i.e. 1000 Hilton bonus points per stay in lieu for room upgrades/breakfast.

With the Starwood you get your space available suite upgrades (platinum members) and lounge access, if there is a lounge, in addition to the 500 SPG Amenity points or local amenity. As I wrote last week, SPG is planning to offer breakfast for Platinum members in locations where there isn’t a lounge. This is not yet confirmed by Starwood, however.

Hyatt is already offering a breakfast for Diamond members at ALL locations and a lounge access. Confirmed suite upgrades are limited to four per year. Properties do not have to offer suites for Diamond members on a complimentary basis, but quite a few do.  Diamond members are eligible for amenity at all locations, and can choose 1000 bonus points instead amenity at North American Hyatt locations.

Marriott upgrades Platinum members to concierge floors and give the lounge access. At locations where the lounge is closed during the weekends or resorts, Platinum members are not eligible for breakfast.

Now Hilton is offering an additional 2500 bonus points for those who “register” on Hilton’s Facebook page and make the reservation through Hilton HHonors page on January 17th to 18th. Apparently, these points are addition to the regular “Any Weekend Anywhere” 1000 Hilton HHonors bonus points for a weekend stay of two nights or longer.
