This is the first in a weekly series that we will be running to give an overview of the top airline frequent flyer programs in the world today and pros and cons of each.

American AAdvantage is the oldest of all the frequent flyer programs in existence today (started in 1981) and the last of the Big 3 US “legacy” carriers (along with United and Delta) that switched their mileage earning structure from distance to revenue-based (starting August 2016).

US Airways sent out a reminder that looked more like an email from American about the coming changes on 30th and 31st of this month.

US Airways will exit Star Alliance on March 30th and will enter Oneworld alliance on March 31, 2014. US Airways frequent fliers are no longer eligible for Star Alliance benefits after march 30, but can enjoy Oneworld Alliance ones. [click to continue…]

SriLankan Airlines spokesperson confirmed to Australian Business Traveller (access here) that the airline is joining the Oneworld alliance on March 1, 2014.

Edit: Seems that this is further delayed and new information should be coming out in the next month or so.

Qatar Airways is going to become a full member of Oneworld alliance on October 30, 2013. Oneworld alliance just issued the following press release:

Qatar Airways is tweaking its Privilege Club in anticipation of joining the Oneworld alliance. These Privilege Club changes will take affect on October 4, 2013 (is that the joining date to Oneworld alliance as well?).

There are quite a few changes to the program: new Platinum tier that requires 600 Qpoints, Qcredits for Gold and Platinum members, new award charts on October 4 (not yet available) and no fuel surcharges on awards on Qatar Airways.
