SriLankan Airlines spokesperson confirmed to Australian Business Traveller (access here) that the airline is joining the Oneworld alliance on March 1, 2014.

Edit: Seems that this is further delayed and new information should be coming out in the next month or so.


The airline has been sponsored by Cathay Pacific and was originally set to join the alliance by the end of 2013, but this was postponed. [click to continue…]

Qatar Airways is tweaking its Privilege Club in anticipation of joining the Oneworld alliance. These Privilege Club changes will take affect on October 4, 2013 (is that the joining date to Oneworld alliance as well?).


There are quite a few changes to the program: new Platinum tier that requires 600 Qpoints, Qcredits for Gold and Platinum members, new award charts on October 4 (not yet available) and no fuel surcharges on awards on Qatar Airways. Qatar Airways just announced that they are shuffling around the booking class alphabet structure on October 1, 2013, in anticipation of joining the Oneworld Alliance. You can read more about this on Qatar’s website here.

Qatar Airways and Oneworld signed an agreement in October 2012 that the airline would join the alliance in 12 to 18 months time and that the British Airways would be the sponsoring airline.

Oneworld just made an announcement that LATAM has chosen Oneworld as the alliance for both airlines. TAM is expected to leave the Star Alliance on the second quarter of 2014. This is full 12 months from now. You can read the Oneworld press release about TAM joining the alliance here.


LAN and TAM merged last year and it was expected that the combined airline would be in the Oneworld alliance. LAN is a member of Onworld and TAM member of competing Star Alliance. When AviancaTaca joined the Star Alliance one condition was that the airline couldn’t  be in the same alliance as TAM. [click to continue…]

Both Qatar Airways and SriLankan Airlines are expected to join the Oneworld alliance sometime in the late 2013/early 2014. The joining dates for both of the airlines have not been confirmed yet.


Now, you can, however, start using these two airlines on Oneworld alliance’s Global Explorer fares. At the same time, the gulf carrier, Gulf Air has withdrawn its participation on these fares. Oneworld alliance top tier frequent fliers have been in disadvantage compared to their Star Alliance equivalent ones when it came to extra luggage allowance based on the frequent flier status.


Now, Oneworld alliance has announced that both extra luggage allowance (one piece or extra 20 kilos) will apply across all Oneworld alliance carriers and passengers will also have an access to fast track security lanes where available. [click to continue…]
