Bangkok Airways is again offering all their routes at 50% off during this fall award sale. The booking window for this offer is October 15 to November 25, 2012 for travel between November 1 and November 31, 2012. This discount applies both one-way and return flights. You can access this offer using this link.

bangkok-airways-award-sale-november-2012

Bangkok Airways had a similar sale this past spring. I purchased one Bangkok to Koh Samui award during that sale and only paid 750 THB in taxes/fees. The airport tax was 100 THB and Bangkok Airways award redemption charge 650 THB. The regular one-way fare on this route is $100 to $150.

bangkok-airways-award-sale-november-2012-routes

Although they advertise this discount to be available in all of their flights, they do have one excluded route Chiang May to Koh Samui.

Most of the domestic destinations are quite cheap due to competition from Thai Airways and AirAsia. The Koh Samui is different, however, as the Bangkok Airways owns the airport. The only domestic destination that I have redeemed FlyerBonus points is Koh Samui

One interesting route is from Bangkok to Yangon that is available for 75 points. I bought a walk up fare on this route in September about an hour before departure and paid $246. Expect to pay $30 to $40 in taxes/fees, if you decide to redeem for BKK-RGN.

Conclusion

It is easy to earn Bangkok Airways FlyerBonus points. You get 15 points for singing up, 15 points birthday bonus every year, often you get a survey after your flight for 10 points, and you earn points for the flights as well.

I couldn’t find it from the terms and conditions, but you need to redeem the award at least 5 days before the scheduled departure time. This is based on my experience in June for Bangkok to Koh Samui award booking.

Here are the terms and conditions of this offer:

  • The 50% discount is only applicable for online redemptions booked through bangkokair.com/flyerbonus between October 15 and November 25, 2012.
  • The valid travel period is between November 1 and November 30, 2012. Ticket validity extensions are not permitted in any case.
  • The 50% discount is applicable for both one-way and round-trip online award redemptions.
  • The 50% discount is applicable for all FlyerBonus Members and their Family & Friend nominees.
  • The 50% discount is applicable only on the number of points required for an award ticket. Taxes and fees are charged separately and are not subject to any discount.
  • Not valid with any other discount and promotion.
  • All ticket redemptions are subject to seat availability at the time of booking.
  • Award Tickets must be issued within 5 days of the redemption date. If award tickets are not issued and/or any payment not completed within the allotted time limit provided on confirmation, the reservation(s) will be automatically cancelled.
  • Cancellation on airline award redemptions and point re-depositing are not allowed
  • Unless otherwise stated above, other Terms and Conditions of FlyerBonus apply
  • Bangkok Airways reserves the right to change any conditions without prior notice
  • The 50% discount is applicable to all participating destinations.
  • Non reroutable and Flight Date change is NOT permitted(No reservation change).
  • Award redemption and award booking must be completed online at least 5 days before the date of travel. Open dated tickets are not permitted.

Starwood is offering an instant SPG Gold status and 1K bonus Starpoints for stays before December 31 for Clear members that enroll to the program by December 31, 2012. The maximum bonus Starpoints that you can earn under this offer is 10000 i.e 10 stays. You can access this offer here. You can combine this offer with SPG’s Better By The Night promotion.

Clear SPG Gold + 1K SPG Promo
Clear SPG Gold + 1K SPG Promo

If you already have a SPG account but don’t have any status and have SPG stays coming up, it is a no lose proposition to sign up using a new account and later merge them.

If you already have Gold or Platinum status with Starwood, I would contact the SPG customer service to find out if they could apply the bonus point promotion to your account regardless. You don’t have anything to lose and maximum of 10K Starpoints to gain.

Here’s the list of the main benefits of the SPG Gold status:

• Three Starpoints® per U.S. dollar spent — that’s a 50% bonus over base level members.
• A complimentary welcome gift at check-in with each stay.
• An enhanced room at check-in, when available.1
• 4 p.m. late checkout.2

Conclusion

Clear made an offer for complimentary access for some SPG members earlier in the year. Now, it is SPG’s turn to offer something for Clear members.

Here are the terms and conditions of this offer:

By enrolling, you accept the terms and conditions of the Starwood Preferred Guest® (SPG®) program, which can be found at spg.com and are subject to change without notice, and you opt to receive direct mail communications. Offer is valid for recipient of this email only, who must be a current Clear member and not currently an SPG member, and is nontransferable. Recipient must register for offer before December 31, 2012. Offer is void for employees of Starwood Hotels & Resorts. Gold Preferred Guest membership is valid through February 2014. To earn Gold status through February 2015, you must meet the standard elite-level qualifications in 2013. Bonus Starpoints® will be earned in increments of 1,000 Starpoints per qualifying stay from September 1 through December 31, 2012; maximum of 10,000 bonus Starpoints may be earned. An eligible stay is one or more consecutive nights at the same participating property, regardless of the number of check-ins and checkouts, paying a rate that is eligible to earn Starpoints and that posts to the member’s SPG account. A list of non-SPG participating properties can be found at spg.com/t&c under section 1.2. Stays must commence on or after September 1, 2012, and be completed by December 31, 2012, and you must present your SPG number at check-in to earn the bonus Starpoints. Usually transferring points between competing programs through a third party is a losing proposition. There is, however, a workaround for transferring Marriott Rewards points to Hilton HHonors at competitive rate by going through the Travel Package route. You can read more about Marriott Travel Packages here.

marriott-travel-package-1-marriott

You can redeem a Marriott Travel Package that comes from 50K to 120K Virgin Atlantic miles. For example the category 1 to 5 Travel Package costs 270K Marriott Rewards points if you choose 120K Virgin Atlantic Flying Club miles option.

After the miles have shown up on Virgin Atlantic, you can transfer them to Hilton HHonors at the rate of TWO Hilton HHonors points per ONE mile.  Your 120K Virgin Atlantic Flying Club miles just turned to 240K Hilton HHonors points.

Hilton HHonors inspirational properties

Hilton has properties in many locations that are desirable and rather expensive by paying. Marriott doesn’t have properties in French Polynesia, Maldives, Bali (Courtyard doesn’t count although I have stayed there), Seychelles etc. Also, best value Hilton HHonors award redemptions are at these locations.

What you can do with 240K Hilton HHonors points?

Hilton HHonors offers VIP awards for Gold & Diamond members and it is very easy to get Gold status.

hilton-hhonors-maldives-marriott

Here’s an example for staying 6 nights at the Conrad or Hilton in the Maldives. Six nights stay using points costs 225K Hilton HHonors points.

hilton-hhonors-fp-bora-bora-marriott

hilton-hhonors-fp-moorea-marriott

You can also use Hilton HHonors points in Moorea and Bora Bora in French Polynesia at the same 37500 points per night when you book a six night stay.

hilton-hhonors-bali-marriott

Hilton HHonors has a very nice Conrad property in Bali where I have been several time. It is far better than the nearby only Marriott property on the island the Courtyard. The Conrad is only 26250 points per night if you do a six nights stay. Total of 157500 points for six nights stay.

hilton-hhonors-seychelles-marriott

Seychelles properties are both at the 37500 level for 6 nights stay also. Total of 225K for a nice stay.

Getting Hilton HHonors Gold/Diamond status match

Hilton’s Gold status is comparable to Marriott’s Gold, but includes a complimentary breakfast even at resort properties. If you are planning to do a swap for Hilton points, you should at least arrange a Hilton Gold status. There are quite a few shortcuts to it.

Hilton offers instant Gold status for Visa Infinite card holders in Asia. You need to move your address to Asia and find usable Visa Infinite number to apply for the account upgrade.

Other option is to  do a Gold via MVP program for just four stays.

Hilton also emailed an instant Gold offer for number of different airline program elites.

I have written a piece how to do a “traditional” Hilton HHonors Gold/Diamond status match.

Here’s what you need to do:

1. Decide if this is something that you would like to do

2. Redeem a Travel Package and choose Virgin Atlantic Flying Club as the airline

3. Once the miles are in your Flying Club Account, you need to call Virgin Atlantic and make the transfer

4. You cannot book awards with Hilton before the points are in your account

5. Consider doing one of the Gold status match/fast track options above.

6. Hilton award stays are status qualifying

7. Book the award and enjoy

Conclusion

If you want to stretch your Marriott Rewards points to the fullest, you should always redeem for travel packages. Also, this transfer option via Virgin Atlantic is fantastic for those aspirational Hilton properties in locations where Marriott is nonexistent.

For the past week, I have been in Jakarta and had a side strip over the weekend to Bandung. The Indonesian economy is heating up and there aren’t that many international hotels in Jakarta compared to other capital cities in Asia. To make things more complicated, I rarely book more than a day in advance.

grand-hyatt-jakarta

1. Monday

I made an award reservation to Grand Hyatt Jakarta when I was on my way from Bandung to Jakarta. The availability was fine.

2. Tuesday

On Tuesday morning, I decided that I could spend another night at the Grand Hyatt using points but online only showed Club Room King award availability at 10K points per night. The regular redemption rate is 8K per night and I would be eligible for club anyway for being a Diamond member.

I decided to call the Grand Club and ask them to extend my stay by a night using the 8K rate. They called me back and told that they could only do it at the 10K rate. Oh well. I decided to pass this opportunity to “over” pay and just said that I will book another hotel.

If I pay for a hotel, my preference is InterContinental Jakarta over Grand Hyatt due to the Royal Ambassador benefits compared to Hyatt Diamond ones. Unfortunately, the InterContinental Jakarta was sold out as was Crowne Plaza.

Few hours later in the afternoon, when I was checking availability, the King Room was available for sale and thus for awards as well. Then, I just made another award reservation online for the night.

3. Wednesday

grand-hyatt-jakarta-award-availability

On Tuesday the Grand Hyatt was completely sold out for the Wednesday night. On Wednesday morning, however, the availability was wide open again. I just made another award reservation for tonight.

grand-hyatt-jakarta-no-award-availability

Later in the day the hotel was sold out again.

Conclusion

It pays to check the award availability daily and sometimes even several times during the day. If guests are canceling their reservations or upgrades are given, it often makes base level room available for sale and awards.

I was somewhat surprised that they weren’t willing to extend my stay on Tuesday at the regular award level, but I had to wait for the inventory open up and to make it by myself. Bit of flexibility goes a long way.

The news that broke before the announcement of Qatar joining the oneworld alliance was the agreement between Etihad and Air France-KLM about strategic codesharing partnership that will take place.

air-france-klm-etihad-airberlin

Air France and KLM will codeshare to certain destinations operated by Etihad via Doha. Etihad will codeshare to some European destinations operated by Air France and KLM. Airberlin will codeshare also with Air France and KLM.

Airberlin is oneworld member airline and both Air France and KLM are members of the competing SkyTeam. Etihad owns part of airberlin and has provided loans to the airline. It is on Etihad’s best interest to ensure that airberlin is successful and stops losing money.

The website airlineroute.net, which specializes to airline route news, posted the following route/codesharing update about Air France, KLM, Etihad and airberlin yesterday:

AIRFRANCE operated by ETIHAD
Abu Dhabi – Colombo
Abu Dhabi – Dhaka
Abu Dhabi – Kathmandu
Abu Dhabi – Male
Abu Dhabi – Paris CDG
Abu Dhabi – Seychelles

KLM operated by ETIHAD
Abu Dhabi – Colombo
Abu Dhabi – Islamabad
Abu Dhabi – Lahore
Abu Dhabi – Melbourne
Abu Dhabi – Sydney

ETIHAD operated by AIRFRANCE
Paris CDG – Bordeaux
Paris CDG – Copenhagen
Paris CDG – Madrid
Paris CDG – Nice
Paris CDG – Toulouse

ETIHAD operated by KLM
Amsterdam – Abu Dhabi
Amsterdam – Billund
Amsterdam – Cardiff
Amsterdam – Newcastle
Amsterdam – Oslo
Amsterdam – Stavanger

AIRFRANCE operated by airberlin
All AB Germany – France Routes
Berlin Tegel – Gdansk
Berlin Tegel – Graz
Berlin Tegel – Krakow
Dusseldorf – Dresden

airberlin operated by AIRFRANCE
Paris CDG – Bordeaux
Paris CDG – Lyon
Paris CDG – Marseille
Paris CDG – Montpellier
Paris CDG – Nantes
Paris CDG – Nice
Paris CDG – Toulouse

Service also operates from Paris Orly

KLM operated by airberlin
All AB Germany – Netherlands Routes
Berlin Tegel – Kaliningrad
Berlin Tegel – Kaliningrad
Berlin Tegel – Krakow

airberlin operated by KLM
All KL Netherlands – Germany Routes
Amsterdam – Edinburgh
Amsterdam – Glasgow
Amsterdam – Manchester

At first look the number of destinations that the airlines codeshare isn’t that great. Air France still has a codeshare agreement in place with Qantas regarding Australia. but Qantas has announced that it will drop it due to the agreement between Qantas and Emirates. Maybe Air France-KLM will tunnel their Australian traffic via Abu Dhabi on Etihad in the future?

The situation with the airberlin is just weird. The airline just officially joined the oneworld alliance earlier this year and was sponsored by British Airways. Now, the airline starts codesharing agreement with Air France & KLM that are both part of the SkyTeam alliance.

Conclusion

This is interesting development and might skew Etihad to join SkyTeam at some point in the future. These codeshare agreements aren’t that beneficial for the consumers unless the airlines are going to form a deeper partnerships and start honoring each other’s frequent flier benefits as well.

Etihad also has a codesharing agreement with American Airlines. Both airlines’ frequent fliers can redeem miles on each others flights.

There has been lot of noise in the past two weeks about the press conference that was going to take place in New York today. The CEO of Qatar Airways denied that the airline would have been joining the alliance last week contradictory what was published on Financial Times.

oneworld invites Qatar Airways on board

The airline is indeed joining the Oneworld alliance and completion of becoming a member is expected to take from 12 to 18 months. So, we are looking late 2013 or early 2014 as likely official joining date for Qatar. You can access the official Oneworld press release here.

qatar-oneworld-official

Currently the oneworld alliance consists of eleven member airlines; airberlin, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, LAN, Qantas, Royal Jordanian and S7 Airlines.

oneworld-wings

Malaysian Airlines and SriLankan Airlines are currently in the process of joining the alliance. Oneworld alliance member Malev went bankrupt earlier this year and the joining of Kingfisher Airlines was cancelled due to its financial difficulties.

Qatar is the first of the big three of the Middle Eastern carriers to join an alliance. Emirates has always said that they are not interested in joining and they just formed a partnership with oneworld member airline Qantas. Etihad announced earlier today the deep codesharing agreement that they are going forward with Air France-KLM.

It is interesting that Qatar chose Oneworld. It has had more frequent flier ties with Star Alliance carriers like United, US Airways, and BMI than with oneworld ones (none).

Qatar Airways route network

qatar-airways-worldwide-map

The airline already serves 120 destinations worldwide. The latest one was reintroduction of flights to Yangon, the capitol of Myanmar, last week.

Americas

qatar-airways-americas

The airline flies to New York, Washington DC, Chicago (in 2013), Houston, Montreal and to Sao Paulo with a continuing service to Buenos Aires.

Europe, North Africa & Middle East

qatar-airways-route-map-middle-east-europe-north-africa

The airline serves more than 30 destinations on continental Europe. The airline has an extensive network in Northern Africa and in the Middle East.

Africa

qatar-airways-africa

The airline serves nine destinations in Central and Southern Africa + Seychelles.

Indian Subcontinent & Asia

qatar-airways-route-map-asia

The airline servers number of destinations in India and Asia.

Australia

qatar-airways-australia-indonesia

The airline currently serves both Perth and Melbourne

Conclusion

This is interesting movie from Qatar’s part. We’ll see if Star Alliance is able to lure either Emirates or Etihad. For the most part, I have liked the service that I have received on Qatar flights. I am not huge fan of the transfer experience in Doha, but it should get better in 2013 when the new airport is ready.

Priority Club just released their latest list of Point Breaks hotels that you can book for only 5000 points per night.

point-breaks-october

There are few InterContinental hotels on the list. The new InterContinental Doha on the PB list is right in the city center. The new InterContinental Danang in Vietnam is also on the Point Breaks. It has been on my list to visit.

You can access the list of Point Breaks hotels that you can find also below by going priorityclub.com/pointbreaks.

My tips booking Point Breaks hotels:

1. Book NOW if you see something that you can use. Hotels often drop off the list soon.

2. Make separate bookings for each night of your stay. If you later need to drop off dates, this will allow you to do that.

Here’s the complete list of Point Breaks hotels that is valid until December 10, 2012.

Please note that I will update this post once I have the United States and Canada Point Breaks available as well.

Conclusion

Point Breaks are the best value hotel awards that are out there. The only problem is sometimes the rather short booking window because the desirable locations are booked solid fast.

Please note that the list below is the list of hotels that were originally available as Point Breaks. Once the Point Breaks inventory is exhausted, you can book them at the normal award levels.
