It is always good to have the possibility to transfer miles and points between programs. If you happen to need some (or even a lot) Hilton HHonors points, you can currently transfer in from number of programs including American Airlines and Virgin Atlantic. Most of the programs have transfer ratio of 5000 points/miles into 10000 Hilton HHonors points. The only two programs where this 1 mile/points to 2 HHonors doesn’t apply are American Airlines and CSA. With American, CSA, and Icelandair the transfer can be completed online. Others must be called in.
With Virgin Atlantic the transfer ratio is 2 Hilton HHonors points for every mile transferred in. You need to transfer in chunks of 5000 miles, and the minim transfer amount is 10000 miles. There is no way to do this online. You need to call it in. Remember that Virgin Atlantic is Hilton HHonors Double Dip partner that gives 1000 VS miles for full service Hilton stays.
American Airlines used to have better transfer ratio with Hilton HHonors in the past. Right now, it is still possible to transfer but only via Points.com. For every 6000 American miles you get 10000 Hilton HHonors points. The minim number of miles that can be transferred is 6000 and the transfers need to be in increments of 6000 miles. The maximum number of miles that can be transferred out in one transaction is 90000 and the yearly maximum to Hilton HHonors is 150000 miles.
Does it make sense to transfer in points from airline programs? Maybe. Like with almost everything in life, it depends. If you are in need of points to be able to issue one of the Hilton HHonors more desirable six day packages, in places like Bora Bora or Maldives, it might even make sense to move in the total number of miles needed. For regular, some would even say over inflated, one night awards, I would say no.
