Three weeks ago I wrote about a similar transfer offer that appeared to be targeted. Now Delta has an offer that is available for everyone. Essentially you can “buy” miles for 1.1 cents per mile when you transfer them in the chunks of 30K at a time. The maximum number of miles one can transfer in a calendar year is 150K, and the number of miles that can received from any number of SkyMiles accounts is 300K. This offer is valid until December 16th, 2011.
Had United or American Airlines made an offer like this, I would say that anybody should buy/transfer the maximum number of miles allowed. In a case of Delta, however, it is not as clear cut. This can be a very good deal if used correctly.
Planning on using purchased SKyMiles for domestic US travel? Most likely not a very good deal, or a deal at all. I always use my miles for international travel in business or first class. Of course, you cannot redeem SkyMiles for first class travel on partner airlines. Still, if you can find award availability on business class on partner airlines like Air France, KLM, Korean Air etc., buying miles at 1.1 cent is a cheap way to buy your way in to a good seat.
Thing to remember:
1. The maximum number of miles one can transfer out in a calendar year is 150K
2. The maximum number of miles one can receive from any number of SkyMiles accounts in a calendar year is 300K.
3. The SkyMiles account where the miles are transferred to must have been open for at least 10 days and had some other transaction as well.
4. There is a fee of 1 cent per miles transferred and a $30 transaction fee. The maximum number of miles per transaction is 30K.
