Starwood Preferred Guest, Priority Club, and Club Carlson all offer an option to redeem an award room by mixing of cash + points. I have used this several times with both Starwood and Priority Club. It is a great way to save some points and pay your award stay partially in cash.
Get ready for Marriott Rewards Cash + Points, a new way to book a stay that lets you combine redemption nights and cash nights within a single reservation of two nights or more. Along with this new flexibility, you’ll still earn points and Elite night credits for your nights paid with cash. So add a few days of relaxation onto a business trip or redeem just a portion of your points for a vacation.
Now, Marriott is trying to confuse people by introducing Cash + Points. When I first saw this, I thought that they would be introducing a similar scheme as the above mentioned chains. Alas, this was NOT what Marriott had in mind. You can access Marriott’s page for this Points + cash here. Please note that you need to log into your Marriott Rewards account first before able to access it.
They are only introducing the ability to include points and paid stays within one reservation and nothing else. You have always had the option of having first an award stay for few stays following a paid stays or vice versa. The only change is that you can now have just one reservation number instead of two or more.
The way Marriott is now marketing this “enhancement” is highly misleading considering the wording used. You would come to believe based on “Cash + Points” that this would be similar to Starwood’s offering. Merely being able to “merge” paid and award reservations is not worth the hoopla.
