Southwest Double Rapid Rewards Points + Separate Milwaukee Bonus

Southwest has just launched a double Rapid Rewards promotion that is valid between September  13 and November 15, 2012. You will receive double the usual base Rapid Reward points that are fare dependent. For Business select fares you will receive 24 points per dollar instead of 12, 20 points per dollar for Anytime fares instead of 10, and 12 points per dollar for Wanna Getaway fares instead of 6.

From now through November 15, 2012, you can earn double points on every flight you take on Southwest Airlines®!  Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Southwest, and the West—it doesn’t matter!  This promotion will get you double points on all your Southwest flights from sea to shining sea!  You’ll receive 24 points (instead of the standard 12 points) per dollar spent on Business Select® Fares, 20 points (instead of ten points) per dollar spent on Anytime Fares, and 12 points (instead of six points) per dollar spent on Wanna Get Away?® Fares.

To take advantage of this offer, simply follow these steps:

Step 1:  Register for this promotion between September 13, 2012 and November 15, 2012.

Step 2:  Book a Southwest flight for yourself between September 13, 2012 and November 15, 2012.

Step 3:  Complete your travel between September 13, 2012 and November 15, 2012.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to double your point earning!  Register and book today.

Thing to note here is that this promotion is there to generate new bookings. Only bookings/tickets issued after September 13 are eligible for the double points. A Southwest Rapid Rewards point is worth 1.67 cents when used for Wanna Getaway fare, 1 cent when used for Anytime fares, and 0.83 cents (less than a cent) when used for Business select fares.

If you have a status with Southwest (A-List & A-List preferred), you will receive triple base points during the promotion period.

The downside of this promotion is that it only applies to travel that has been booked after September 13. If you have locked in for a low fare, you need to calculate if the extra points are worth canceling and rebooking your reservation. Most likely the answer is no. It is a great promotion, however, for those that generally buy last minute Business select fares.

Southwest has a separate promotion for double points for Milwaukee that is most likely combinable with the systemwide one. You will receive a separate double bonus for flights in/out of Milwaukee between November 3 and January 31, 2012. These overlap with the other promotion for 13 days.

Conclusion

Southwest has a very straightforward program for domestic fliers. It doesn’t excite me too much because of the inability to use miles for international business/first class travel.  I do not have, however, problem flying with Southwest when they offer competitive price and the flight time/routing that I need.
