140K Starpoints or 295 Euros per Night? The Worst Starwood Award Value Ever?

I am just writing a piece about category 7 Starwood awards at specialty locations that don’t even have a published number of points required per night. The article should be ready later today. The only way of getting the number of required points per night for these locations, is to call Starwood Preferred Guest hotline.

In the process of doing this piece, I found what has to be the worst SPG award value ever.

Would you rather pay 295 euros per night compared to 140000 Starpoints?

Hotel Cala di Volpe, Costa Smeralda

This lovely hotel on the Sardinian coast is only open from May 16 to September 26, 2013. When I was searching for prices, the hotel came up at 295 euros per night for May 22, 2013, but would require 140K SPG points for the same night. I confirmed the number of required points with the Platinum Concierge.

Conclusion

My personal opinion is that Starwood’s point requirement for anything above category 5 is inflated compared to number of base points that you earn (without any promotions) from hotel stays.

Of course this example is totally outrageous. Why even bother publishing 140000 Starpoint requirement per night? I cannot see anybody redeeming for this property.
