Buy or Gift American Airlines AAdvantage Miles & Get Max 15K Bonus January 2013

American Airlines has just started a new promotion for buying or gifting AAdvantage miles. You or the receiver can earn maximum of 15K bonus miles for buying/being gifted 40K miles. The price of a mile is 2.2 cents under this offer that is valid until January 31, 2013.

You can only buy or gifted total of 60000 AAdvantage miles per calendar year. If you need to purchase more miles, I would suggest opening an account for an immediate family member. For ticketing purposes, it would be better if you share the same last name.

When it makes sense to buy miles?

  1. Short on miles for premium international flight award on partner airlines
  2. One-way travel in markets where OW fares are expensive
  3. Travel that requires flexibility as award tickets can be changed/canceled for a fee/without fee almost like flexible tickets

American Airlines has a competitive award chart. As long as you totally avoid British Airways and to some extend Iberia flights, there are no fuel surcharges. On all other airlines, AA only charges actual taxes/fees for award tickets

We will see better offers later in the year to buy American Airlines AAdvantage miles. If you happen to need some miles right now, it can make sense to buy them.

Here are the terms and conditions of this offer:

Transactions are nonrefundable and nonreversible. Please allow 72 hours for purchased AAdvantage® miles to post to the designated AAdvantage account. Please allow 5 days for the bonus miles to post. The bonus miles earned are calculated based on the total miles purchased during the promotional period, regardless of the number of transactions. For example, a purchase or gift transaction of 25,000 miles and a second transaction of 5,000 miles during January 2013, (for a total of 30,000 miles) will earn 8,000 miles. Bonus offer begins 12:00 am CST Jan 1, 2013 and ends 11:59 pm CST Jan 31, 2013. If purchasing miles, the AAdvantage bonus miles will be posted to the purchasers’ AAdvantage account. If giving miles, the AAdvantage bonus miles will be posted to the receivers’ AAdvantage account. buyAAmiles and giftAAmiles transactions are limited to a combined maximum of 60,000 miles per account, per calendar year. Bonus miles earned do not count toward the annual limit. AAdvantage miles purchased or earned through this promotion do not count toward elite-status qualification or Million Miler(SM) status.
