United’s January Buy Miles Offer and Why It Doesn’t Make Any Sense

I value my United Mileage Plus miles highly due to the flexibility of using them for convoluted award trips and because United allows both a stopover & double open jaw on its awards. Also, I love the ability to book these awards on United.com without having to call customer service.

Today, I received an offer from United Airlines to buy miles at 25% discount. (Note that I cannot provide a link because it is personalized with my UA account number)

Trouble with Boeing 787’s Continue as ANA and JAL Ground the Planes

It has not been possible to escape the news about the troubles that airlines have had in the past couple of weeks with Boeing 787 aircraft.

Last week, I wrote about the three incident that JAL had in the span of few days. Now, ANA had smoke in the cockpit and the flight had to be diverted.

US Airways Dividend Miles Buy Miles 100% Bonus Offer (January 2013)

It took a while for US Airways Dividend Miles to launch an offer for buying Dividend Miles. These sales were monthly in 2012 and I expect them to continue in 2013. These sales must be very lucrative for US Airways.

This time the offer is targeted to those that purchased Dividend Miles in 2012. You can buy or gift maximum of 50K miles and the number of miles purchased will be doubled. This offer is valid until January 31, 2013.If you didn’t receive the sale email, you can try accessing this offer here.

List Of Participating Properties in Hyatt’s January 48 Hour Sale

Earlier today, I wrote about Hyatt’s January 48 hour sale. I requested a list of participating properties from Hyatt and they were kind enough to pull up the following list of participating properties in the United States.

Participating properties:
Hyatt Regency Monterey
Hyatt Regency Pier 66

Priority Club Already Tweaking Award Requirements (Mistakes?)

Priority Club is set to change the number of points required for 60% of its hotel portfolio on January 18, 2013. Today, I received emails from LoyaltyLobby readers that they had already found lower points requirement for some hotels and there was similar reports on FlyerTalk as well.

We just went through number of IHG hotels and found the following changes that had been applied already. None of the prices in points had gone up but around 170 had gone down.

I have very hard time believing that Priority Club had intended to lower the price of the following three InterContinental hotels to 15K points until 2014. I would encourage you to book them now if you have use for them at 15K level.

Update on Platinum Bonus Postings for Royal Ambassadors on InterContinental Stays

Two days ago, I wrote about some confusion about InterContinental Royal Ambassador members and whether they still qualified for Platinum bonus on InterContinental stays. I requested LoyaltyLobby readers to send me one screen shots about how their stays had posted since beginning of this year.

Seems that there really hasn’t been any change. All the feedback that I received confirmed that the Platinum bonus had properly been applied for their stays. Of course, there is always a possibility that there had been a glitch how Priority Club had awarded bonus points for the stays right after the new year.

United Airlines Status Match Campaign

It is usual for airlines to match each others statuses as long as the match is from a competing alliance. Airlines tend not to match from their alliance partners i.e. United won’t match status from Lufthansa as they are both in Star.

United has long had a status match program and they have just updated the terms and conditions of this program. You can read more about this challenge on United’s website.

The following requirements are valid for matches done between January 1 and January 31, 2013. It is unclear, at thus time what the requirements are going to be later in the year and if United is going to change the match requirements from time to time.

Have you matched with United recently? How long did it take and what status you used for the status match? Leave a comment below.
