SPG Award Category Change Update

Starwood changed the award categories of around 20% of its hotels yesterday (mostly up). When the list of originally published, there was a note that further changes may take place before March 5, 2013. You can read my original post about this change here and the reminder here.

Now, Starwood has made the above announcement on FlyerTalk. Although there are only handful of changes, upping Royal Orchid Sheraton from category 2 to category 3 property has huge impact in number of points required for an award night.

The number of points required for a weekend stay (Friday & Saturday nights) will change from 3K Starpoints to 7K Starpoints per night (rise of 133%). Weeknight stays will rise from 4K SPG to 7K SPG (75% change).

The location of the Royal Orchid Sheraton has never worked for me, but some prefer its location by the river. The club lounge is spacious and has very nice view of the Chao Phraya river, but it ain’t worth 7K SPG per night.
