What we first need to do, is to establish the number of points that you earn on average per dollar spend taking into account elite amenity points, elite bonuses, and possible credit card tie-up.

The number of points earned varies a lot within the IHG Group depending, whether you are an Ambassador/Royal Ambassador member and stay at InterContinental hotels or mainly other brands.

This second part tries to solve the number of points that you on average as an Gold Ambassador and Royal Ambassador member would earn.

In order to be able to compare programs, I am using the following variables, when calculating the number of points that you earn:

– ADR (Average Daily Rate) – $175 – Assuming major metropolitan cities.

– Full service properties.

– Top-tier with 60 nights (10 stays each 3/2/1 nights) & mid-tier with 30 nights (5 stays each 3/2/1 nights)

Number Of Base Points Earned

You used to earn a flat 2000 points per stay at all InterContinental hotels regardless of the length of your stay. Last year, IHG changed the number of points earned for InterContinental Hotels in the Americas (North, Central & South) and the Caribbean to 10 points per dollar spend.

Not to make things too easy, the InterContinental Alliance Resorts (Phoenix & two properties in Las Vegas) are excluded from this. You continue to earn flat 2000 points per stay regardless of the stay length at them.

You still earn a flat 2000 points per stay at all other InterContinental hotels.

IHG Rewards Club Elite Bonus

IHG Rewards Club Gold members earn 10% and Platinum members 50% bonus on the number of base points earned. Ambassador members are automatically IHG Rewards Club Gold and Royal Ambassador members are automatically Platinum members. You earn IHG Rewards Club bonuses also on InterContinental stays.

Royal Ambassador Bonus

Royal Ambassador members earn an additional 50% bonus on base points earned. This is in additional to the IHG Rewards Club Platinum bonus that is also 50%.

Ambassador Accelerator

Ambassador members should always sign up for the Ambassador Accelerator. You earn an additional 20000 bonus points for every 20 nights at InterContinental hotels. This is on average 1333 bonus points per night.

Chase Priority Club Visa

You will  earn 5 Priority Club points per dollar charges at all IHG properties worldwide. There is also a 10% rebate on number of Priority Club points required for a free night.

Here I have tried to capture the earning difference between the Americas & the Caribbean and the rest of the world. Approximately one third of the properties are in the countries that earn you 10 points per dollar spend.

So, I have done two calculations to capture the difference in the number of points that you earn. I have prorated the Ambassador Accelerator bonus, taken into account both the Platinum and Royal Ambassador bonuses.

The number of points that you earn as Royal Ambassador without the Chase credit card is about 22 points per dollar spend and 27 with the card.

IHG Rewards Club Gold Ambassador Member

Gold Ambassador members earn 10% elite bonus and the Ambassador bonus. There is no Royal Ambassador type of bonus for Ambassador members.

You would earn around 16 points per dollar without the Chase card and 21 points per dollar with.

Conclusion

The Ambassador Accelerator makes a huge difference in the number of points that you earn for both Ambassador and Royal Ambassador members. The Platinum and Royal Ambassador bonuses double the number of base points that you earn.
