Starwood has a Best Rate Guarantee for reservations that are made on SPG’s websites. If you claim is successful, Starwood will match the rate and give you additional 10% off or you can choose to have 2000 bonus Starpoints. You can access SPG’s web page for their guarantee here.
The unique element of SPG’s BRG (Best Rate Guarantee) is that you don’t need to have a reservation before invoking it. You can test the waters by filling out the guarantee form and, if it is successful, you have then 24 hours to make the reservation to which the BRG is applied to.
Starwood Best Rate Guarantee Terms
The terms that SPG uses are quite fair.
You have 24 hours after making your reservation to invoke it. You must do this at least 24 hours before the standard check in time of the hotel OR 48 hours if the reservation is done on non-English Starwood website.
Unlike with IHG or Club Carlson BRG’s, the compared currencies can be different and will be converted to the currency of the reservation. The difference between the rates has to be at least 1% for the claim to be successful.
If the lower competing rate includes extras such as breakfast and the Starwood rate doesn’t, SPG will match the lower rate, but won’t include the extras.
Obviously, the booked room type and view needs to be same.
There are no mentions, however, about potential differences in rate type i.e. prepaid on 3rd party ite vs non-prepaid on Starwood’s website.
Then there are instances, where you cannot compare the rates and where the BRG doesn’t apply. You cannot compare member only rates to SPG rates or opaque rates on Hotwire and Priceline.
Also, Starwood won’t match rates on websites that don’t offer instant confirmation.
Starwood Best Rate Guarantee: Case Aloft Kuala Lumpur
I have a trip starting from Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday and decided to hit the city the day before to check out the recently opened Aloft property.
Their rates are bit on the high side (347.68 MYR) on SPG’s own website considering the benefits (or lack of them) that Alofts offer for SPG Platinum members.
Luckily, I found a 3rd party website that was offering the property at $108 (all the taxes included) versus 347.68 MYR ($114.63).
I filled the website form for BRG and got the confirmation that it may take up to 48 hours for the claim to be processed.
You will also receive an email from SPG’s BRG department that the request has been received.
It took 15 hours for SPG to process the claim and approve it.
They sent me a new email confirmation that showed the 2000 bonus points or 10% discount. My choice was the Starpoints.
You can no longer modify the stay on SPG.com once you have done the BRG.
The Starwood’s Best Rate Guarantee is not always walk in the park. I tried to match some prices Orbitz had earlier in the year and they were long gone by the time (2 days later) someone from SPG’s BRG department had a look at them.
Starwood can keep their call centers staffed 247, so they certainly could make sure that the BRG department is open all day/all night as well.
If you have a short stay, the 2000 bonus Starpoints is likely the best choice. I value Starpoint at around 2 cents, so 2000 Starpoints would represent around $40 discount.
