Not sure, when I was last time in Europe during the Eurovision song contest, but this year I was in Madrid and watched the show on TV. For those that are not familiar with this concept, it is a Europe wide song contest to which each of the EBU members send one band/singer and then the countries vote for the winner.
Nobody really takes this too seriously, as sometimes the performers are rather campy and borderline terrible, but it is fun to watch over few adult beverages.
So, the Eurovision 2014 song contest is held in Copenhagen in the second (likely) weekend of May. The organizers are allowed to move the dates around, but it should be the second (likeliest) or third weekend of May.
Obviously, the hotel prices will go through the roof and I decided to check what hotel points you could use NOW to secure a room during weekends in May 2014.
InterContinental Hotels Group – IHG Rewards Club
There is a Crowne Plaza hotel in Copenhagen, but the booking window is yet to open beyond May 4, 2014
Hyatt Hotels – Hyatt Gold Passport
You type Copenhagen and you get a suggestion for Park Hyatt in Hamburg some 250 kilometers away. Just proves how bad Hyatt’s international foot print really is.
Starwood Hotels – Starwood Preferred Guest
Starwood has Denmark on the drop down menu, but no hotels in the country.
They used to have one, because I have stayed at Starwood property there, but it has been reflagged.
Hilton Hotels – Hilton HHonors
The Hilton hotel by the airport is available at 50,000 points per night for every night in May.
Marriott Hotels – Marriott Rewards
There is a Marriott hotel in Copenhagen, but the reservation window is not open yet for the possible dates in May.
You have all the dates open using Club Carlson point at all the four Carlson affiliated hotels in Denmark. Note that some of these hotels don’t have any paid availability or haven’t loaded it yet, but award availability does exist.
When you have an event coming that is based on the winning country/team, it is good to have points with a program that allows you to book full year or more in advance.
What is the best about these point rates that they allow full cancellation the day before or the day of arrival for full flexibility.
Hyatt and Starwood would require the hotel to offer awards IF they have standard room availability, but they don’t have properties in Denmark. Marriott, IHG Rewards Club and Club Carlson properties are only required to have certain number of rooms available using points or they can apply for blackout dates.
Never been to the Eurovision Song Contest (few of my friend have). But now I have at least the hotel booked for 2014.
