FireFly is a small “commuter” airline based in Kuala Lumpur. Tt flies from the SZB airport that is more conveniently located to downtown compared to KUL. FireFly is owned by Malaysia Airlines.
Now, Malaysia Airlines has made it possible for its frequent flier program Enrich members to earn and redeem miles on FireFly flights.
Note that, although the airline is owned by MAS, FireFly is not an affiliate of oneworld alliance. This means that you cannot earn or redeem miles on FireFly using other oneworld alliance frequent flier programs such as American Airlines AAdvantage.
FireFly flies around Malaysia and to some international destinations such as Koh Samui and Singapore.
Whether it makes sense to redeem for flights operated FireFly, is a good question. Above is a fare breakdown from my FireFly flight from Koh Samui to Subang last year. The taxes and fees are total of 62% of the fare. Malaysia is likely to collect all these at the time of the award ticket issuance.
It is good to have more ways to use those Enrich miles that I have accrued from some Malaysia flights that would not have earned anything on other programs AND to earn miles for FireFly flights in the future.
The flight that I took from Koh Samui to Kuala Lumpur on FireFly last year was uneventful. Wouldn’t mind flying them again.
