Marriott and American Airlines put up a press release yesterday by announcing this “new” partnership that would allow Marriott Rewards members to earn American Airlines AAdvantage miles and convert Marriott Rewards points to miles.
But this partnership is not a new one. Marriott and American must have run into some contractual disputes back in 2010, as they announced back in April that year that their partnership would come to an end on June 30, 2010.
Now, this partnership has been reintroduced. You can have American Airlines as a direct deposit airline or convert Marriott Rewards points to airline miles. My favorite use of Marriott Rewards points as always been to use them to issue travel packages (you can read more about Marriott Travel packages here).
Marriott usually has a promotion for new airline partners. We should learn in the next month or so if they will have something with AA as well.
When this partnership was ending in 2010, American Airlines had a hotel points conversion bonus targeted to Marriott members. I issued four travel packages with each 120,000 miles component. These helped me to get my 2 Million Miler status with AAdvantage program.
I am glad that Marriott and AA have worked out whatever commercial disputes they might have had and reintroduced this partnership.
