Qatar Airways and Oneworld signed an agreement in October 2012 that the airline would join the alliance in 12 to 18 months time and that the British Airways would be the sponsoring airline.
It was expected that the official joining date for the Qatar to join the alliance would be sometime in late 2013 or early 2014. Due to heavy passenger traffic around the year end holidays, it is unlikely that the joining would happen in December or January.
Now, the joining date for the Qatar to join the Oneworld would have been “cemented” to be in October according to an article on the Business Traveller (you can access the piece here). This would be within the original guidance of 12 to 18 months.
The other Oneworld candidate airline, SriLankan Airlines, that signed the agreement back in June 2012 and was expected to join by the end of 2013, might see a slight delay and join early 2014. This according to internet sources.
It would be great if the Qatar would join the alliance in October this year. I have taken a lot Qatar flights and always has a problem, where to credit them. I have credited to BMI, United and US Airways over the years and only the agreement with the US remains.
I would prefer if these alliances would be more forthcoming with the joining dates of their future members, so that the traveling public could plan accordingly.
