Singapore Airlines Introduces Pay With KrisFlier Miles

Singapore Airlines has rolled out an update to its online booking engine that now allows you to pay for your economy class tickets using your KrisFlier miles. The number of miles required for a trip is entirely based on the fare + taxes/fees.

You can pay partially with miles and rest by cash. This option values KrisFlier mile exactly at $0.0079 USD per mile that is 0.79 cents.

Note that you will ear proportionate mileage credit for these tickets. You can access Singapore Airlines website for this option here.

Here’s one-way flight from Sao Paulo to Hong Kong for August 15, 2013. The price of a one-way ticket with all the taxes and fees included is $2057.19.

If you would rather use this “Pay With KrisFlier Miles” option, this one-way trip would require 259,896 miles. The one-way first class saver award including the 15% online booking discount should be about 105,000 miles for the same city pair.

When does this makes sense?

If you have KrisFlier miles expiring, it definitely make sense to use them even at this terrible value of less than one US cent rather than letting them turn into dust.

Conclusion

This just illustrates the very low value that the airlines are valuing these miles as liability on their books. This is welcome development to those that earn few Krisflier miles and can now use them to partially pay for trips that they would have taken anyway.

It doesn’t make any sense to use this option to fully pay for your ticket, however. KrisFlier miles are very poor value, when used for economy awards anyway, due to very high “scam” charges (fuel surcharges) that the airline collects on award tickets.

KrisFlier miles are decent value, when used for Singapore Airlines miles in business and first class, due to expanded availability for SQ program members that other Star Alliance airlines don’t have access to. Also, don’t forget the 15% redemption discount for tickets booked on Singapore Airlines website.

Here are frequently asked questions by Singapore Air about this program:

1. What can I pay for with my KrisFlyer miles?

4. Can I use my KrisFlyer miles to pay for the associated taxes and surcharges on my award ticket or flight upgrade?

No. At the moment, you cannot use your KrisFlyer miles to pay for the taxes and surcharges associated with award tickets and flight upgrades. We are working towards providing this payment option in subsequent phases of development.

5. Can I use my KrisFlyer miles to pay for any other service or product?

Not at this point in time. In future phases, we may extend the use of KrisFlyer miles as a payment option for other Singapore Airlines services or products.

6. Can I use my KrisFlyer miles to pay for the airfare of my family member or friend?

Yes, as long as he or she is one of your five redemption nominees.

7. Can I use my Singapore Airlines ticket that was paid for with KrisFlyer miles to fly on another airline?

No. Tickets purchased with KrisFlyer miles can only be used on flights operated by Singapore Airlines or SilkAir. The tickets cannot be used for travel on any other airline.

When you use your KrisFlyer miles to pay for your airfare on singaporeair.com you will be able to:

  • pay less through your credit/debit card
  • start using your KrisFlyer miles earlier than before (depending on the conversion rate, you need to have a minimum of 5,000 KrisFlyer miles before you can begin to use them)
  • have more opportunities to use your KrisFlyer miles before expiry, and
  • enjoy the flexibility of using your miles to pay for any available seat on any available flight on singaporeair.com to any Singapore Airlines or SilkAir destination.

SECTION C: How many KrisFlyer miles you will require

1. What is the minimum number of KrisFlyer miles required?

You need to have a minimum of 5,000 KrisFlyer miles before you can use them to pay for your airfare. The exact amount may vary due to the conversion rate.

2. What is the maximum number of KrisFlyer miles that can be used for each transaction?

You can use as many KrisFlyer miles as you have in your account, up to 100% of the airfare(s) in the transaction. Some items may not be payable with KrisFlyer miles.

3. Must I pay for my entire ticket with KrisFlyer miles?

No. You can choose to pay for part of your ticket with KrisFlyer miles and the remaining part with your credit/debit card. A minimum of 5,000 KrisFlyer miles are needed before you can choose to pay for your ticket with miles, but the exact amount may vary due to the conversion rate.

SECTION D: How you will earn miles

1. Will I earn KrisFlyer and Elite miles, and/or PPS Value if I use my KrisFlyer miles to pay for airfare(s) on Singapore Airlines or SilkAir for:

(i) Myself?

Yes, you can earn KrisFlyer and Elite miles if the fare is eligible to earn miles. KrisFlyer and Elite miles will be earned in proportion to the fare (excluding taxes), that you have paid with your credit/debit card.

KrisFlyer and Elite miles will not be earned if your ticket has been paid entirely with miles.

(ii) My redemption nominee(s) only?

No, you will not earn miles as you are not part of the travelling party in the same booking. KrisFlyer miles and Elite miles will be earned by your redemption nominee who is travelling as long as he/she is a KrisFlyer member and you have selected an eligible fare. KrisFlyer and Elite miles will be earned in proportion to the fare (excluding taxes) that has been paid with your credit/debit card.

(iii) Myself and my redemption nominee(s) with whom I am travelling?

Yes. You will earn KrisFlyer miles and Elite miles on your own fare if you are part of the travelling party and you have selected an eligible fare. KrisFlyer and Elite miles will be earned in proportion to the total fare (excluding taxes) you have paid with your credit/debit card.

The miles earned are allocated in your favour as your KrisFlyer miles are used to pay for the airfare. This means that miles earned from the booking are first credited to you, up to the maximum possible for your ticket. Thereafter, miles earned are proportionately credited to the other passengers in your itinerary – as long as they are KrisFlyer members.

In each instance, you can also earn PPS Value when you purchase a ticket in the Singapore Airlines Suites, First Class or Business Class. This includes the airfare and fuel surcharge components of the airfare that you have paid with your credit/debit card.

2. Can I credit the miles earned to another frequent flyer programme?

No. When you use your KrisFlyer miles to pay for your ticket on Singapore Airlines or SilkAir, the miles you earn can only be credited to your KrisFlyer account.

3. If I do not have enough KrisFlyer miles, can I purchase miles to pay for my airfare?

No. You can only purchase miles if you do not have sufficient miles to redeem an award ticket. For more information on the purchase of miles, please go to Maximise your miles.

SECTION E: When you need to make changes

1. Can I make changes to a ticket that has been paid with KrisFlyer miles?

For tickets that are paid with KrisFlyer miles, the prevailing fare conditions of the ticket will apply. Where changes to the flight or itinerary are permitted under the fare conditions, relevant fees may be charged. These fees can only be paid with your credit/debit card.

You can make changes to your flight or itinerary via the following channels:

  • (i) submitting a request online at the Manage Booking page,
  • (ii) contacting KrisFlyer Membership Services or your local Singapore Airlines office.

If you wish to change your meal and/or seat preferences, you may do so online.

2. Can I refund a ticket that has been paid with KrisFlyer miles?

For tickets that are paid with KrisFlyer miles, the prevailing fare conditions of the ticket will apply. Where refunds are permitted under the fare conditions, relevant fees may be charged.

Where refunds are permitted, the applicable amount (after deducting relevant fees) will first be refunded to your credit/debit card, up to the maximum amount that was paid using the card. Any remaining amount will then be returned in KrisFlyer miles.

Expired KrisFlyer miles will not be refunded.

3. If the KrisFlyer miles used to purchase my ticket have expired, will they be refunded?

Expired KrisFlyer miles cannot be refunded. Only unexpired miles will be refunded to your KrisFlyer account. For your benefit, the miles with the latest expiry date will be refunded first.

SECTION F: What this means for award redemption

1. Is paying with KrisFlyer miles the same as redeeming them for award tickets and flight upgrades?

No. Unlike redemption, this new payment option enables you to use your KrisFlyer miles to pay for airfares on Singapore Airlines or SilkAir on singaporeair.com. This gives you greater flexibility to use your miles to pay for any available seat on any available flight operated by Singapore Airlines and SilkAir.

2. Can I continue to redeem my KrisFlyer miles for Saver, Standard and Full awards?

Yes, you can continue to redeem your KrisFlyer miles for Saver, Standard or Full awards and flight upgrades. You will also enjoy a 15% discount on the miles required for redemption, when you complete your transaction online.

3. Can I use my KrisFlyer miles to pay for the associated taxes and surcharges on my Saver, Standard or Full award?

No. At the moment, you can only use your KrisFlyer miles to pay for associated taxes and surcharges when you pay for your airfare on singaporeair.com

We are working on extending this payment option to include the taxes and surcharges associated with award tickets and flight upgrades in future phases of development.

4. Is it better to use my KrisFlyer miles to redeem for an award ticket or flight upgrade, or to use it to pay for my airfare?

This depends on your travel needs. Airfares vary due to seasonality, flight timings and ticket conditions, so the number of KrisFlyer miles required to pay for the airfare also varies accordingly. In the same way, the number of miles required for redemption depends on the type of award you choose and the accompanying ticket conditions. We advise you to make an informed comparison, before deciding on what is best suited to your travel needs.
