Yesterday, I wrote about United mishap where they lowered the base fare on many, if not all, domestic markets to zero. Tickets were issued and soon United took their website booking engine down for “maintenance”. You can read my piece about this here.
United just made the above announcement on Twitter. The tickets are honored as issued.
IMHO, there shouldn’t have even been a question, whether these are honored or not, but United has known not to be very customer friendly as of late (look at the DOT statistics).
United marketed fares with base fare at zero and only the security taxes added. Some people made the bookings, United charged their credit cards, and then issued the tickets.
It took United about 26 hours to “study” the situation with these tickets. Likely they just came to a conclusion after the “study” period that they would have a prolonged battle with DOT (Department of Transportation) and people holding these tickets and it is just easier to honor them.
As I wrote yesterday, maybe it would be time for United to have better internal controls in place for fare filings?
