Marriott Rewards has again been sending out Thank You-offer for those that are quite close to extending their Gold or Platinum Elite status with a shortcut offer.
Marriott Rewards Gold requires 50 nights and the Platinum status 75 nights yearly. On the above example that LoyaltyLobby reader forwarded me, Marriott is willing to extend the Platinum status for 60 instead of the usual 75.
The number of nights required to extend Platinum status during the year end Thank You-period is usually 20 regardless of the number of nights stayed earlier in the year.
Note that Marriott may extend the Platinum status even if you don’t do the required 20 nights. Marriott extended my Platinum status for several years for far less than the 75 nights per year requirement.
You have to decide if this offer is right for you. I would suggest that you consider the following other options as well:
1. If your account is downgraded, you can always buy back the Platinum status next year for 40K Marriott Rewards points. This can be done yearly. You can read more about this here.
2. Marriott usually offers challenges for Gold members to get to the Platinum level for x-number of nights within three/four month period. These offers are currently by invitation only.
It might be time to consider if you really need the Platinum status? The Gold status gives pretty much the same core benefits i.e. complimentary internet and club access as the Platinum one.
Although Marriott’s requirement for the Platinum status is high (75 nights), they have all kind of fast track offers and promotions to reach it for far fewer nights.
Also, once you have hit the tier, you can keep it indefinitely by just doing the required nights or simply using your points to buy it back yearly.
