There is a good read about Etihad’s equity investments on other airlines on weekend New York Times. You can access the full article here.
The airline is much smaller than its rival gulf airlines Emirates, from the neighboring Dubai emirates, and Qatar Airways from Doha.
Etihad has taken equity positions on airlines that are feeding its Abu Dhabi hub. The airline currently has interests on:
– Virgin Australia
– Air Berlin
– Air Seychelles
– Air Serbia
– Jet Airways
– Air Lingus
Qatar Airways and Emirates have taken different approach by expanding their networks instead of relying fees from partners. Qatar Airways is also joining the Oneworld alliance on 30th of this month.
It is interesting to see if Etihad’s bet on investing other airlines to feed its Abu Dhabi hub will play out at the end. Surely, there are money losing airlines knocking its doors in search of equity investments.
