Air France and KLM are both selling Flying Blue miles between October 10 and December 31m, 2013, at up to 50% bonus on number of miles purchased.
Non-elite member can purchase up to 40,000 miles and get 40% bonus. Elite members can purchase up to 100,000 miles and get 50% bonus for buying more than 90,000 miles.
The price of a mile purchased under this offer at the 50% bonus level is 2.3 US cent each. You can access this offer in Flying Blue’s website here, but you actually have to make the purchase when logged in on KLM’s or Air France’s website.
Does it make sense to purchase Flying Blue miles at this price?
In most cases the answer is likely no. If you have some premium award in mind and the price by buying miles + all the taxes fees is a lot less, I would do it. You should consider, however, buying some miles from US based programs such as AA/UA/US that would likely be a better deal.
Even when programs have 50% to 100% bonus promotions for buying or sharing miles, they don’t necessarily make sense at all. There is a reason why Flying Blue miles are sometimes referred as Flying Poo.
