United MileagePlus 25% Points To Miles Conversion Bonus (Max 20K)

United Airlines is again offering a conversion bonus from select programs to miles between October 18 and November 30, 2013.

The converted points must post to MileagePlus by November 30, 2013, and the conversion bonus will post separately by January 31, 2014.

United is offering 25% conversion bonus (last year 30%), but has upped the maximum bonus to 20,000 miles from 15,000 in 2012.

You must register for this offer before converting the points and you can do it here.

Here are hotel and car partners eligible for this offer:

Marriott Rewards

Converting Marriott Rewards points to miles makes ZERO sense. You should redeem for a travel package. Even if you throw the hotel part of the travel package away, you earn more miles than doing a basic conversion.

I don’t see anything on the T&C’s that would exclude travel package conversions being eligible for this offer. This would be the best option. Due to Marriott’s and United’s RewardsPlus partnership, you get an additional 10% bonus for travel package to United miles conversions. You can read more about RewardsPlus partnership here.

Hilton HHonors

Makes no sense at all converting Hilton HHonors points to United Miles.

Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG)

ua-conversion-promo-spg

Most of the airlines are 1:1 conversion partners with SPG, but United requires TWO Starpoints per ONE United mile. Don’t even consider this.

IHG Rewards Club

I value my IHG Rewards Club points around half of a cent to 0.6 cents. Converting IHG Rewards Club points to United miles would be at fair value considering the 25% conversion bonus. 400,000 IHG Rewards Club points would convert to 100,000 United miles.

Club Carlson

Converting from Club Carlson after their unannounced points to airline miles devaluation (read more here) makes no sense at all. I converted some Club Carlson points to United miles during this promo in 2012. Won’t do it again.

Hyatt Gold Passport

Terrible value again. You should not even consider this.

Choice Privileges

ua-conversion-promo-choice

Choice has award occasional award sales for just 8,000 points per night (currently on-going). Converting to United doesn’t provide good value.

Wyndham Rewards

ua-conversion-promo-wyndham-rewards

This is one choice that can make sense. Right now there is even a promotion (read more here) to buy Wyndham Rewards points and you could later convert those to United Miles.

You can purchase 48,000 Wyndham Rewards points for $440. You would get 23,750 United miles for buying the points and converting to miles after the conversion bonus. The price of a United miles would be 1.85 cents each and you would be left with 500 Wyndham Rewards points.

Shangri-la Golden Circle

I would pass this one as well.

Hertz Gold Plus Rewards

Seems that Hertz points are best used for car rentals than converting to United miles.

Conclusion

If you have considered converting hotel points to United miles, now would be the right time to do it. I would, however, only do it from limited number of programs, because it makes no sense at all from most.

You could purchase some Wyndham Rewards points and then convert those to United miles. United itself doesn’t sell MileagePlus miles to consumers for less than 2 cents each.
