LoyaltyLobby reader forwarded me an email that she had received from Miles & More earlier this week probing my opinion of buying one year of Frequent Traveller status extension for 500 euros.
Lufthansa (Miles & More parent) has been offering Senator-status extensions for 2,000 euros and Frequent Traveller ones for 500 euros for few years. Buying the extension of the status may make sense.
You should consider following:
– How much would you save on extra baggage charges?
– Would you use the lounge at the airport?
– How much you value the business class check in and expedited boarding (sometimes security as well).
The LoyaltyLobby reader indicated that she likes to do shopping trips to the States and would benefits of the extra piece allowance that Lufthansa extends to its Star Alliance Silver members.
I would simply calculate the possible extra baggage charges that she would have without the status and then throw in the lounge access and business class check in benefit to see if paying 500 euros would be worth it.
This is the time of the year that some airlines and hotels are sending offers to extend the status with fast track offers or by paying a price in cash or points. You should not overvalue the status related benefits and make a fair assessment, whether paying the fee would be worth it or not
