NY Times On Mattress Runs

There was an article the other day on NY Times (access here) about a novel concept of a hotel mattress run, where the guest just checks in to get a night/stay credit towards status with the program.

In the article the SPG spokesperson says that they see more such a activity towards the end of the calendar year (what a surprise?).

The article has an example of staying at a cheaper hotel and then redeem for a luxury one (this is something new?).

Mileage runs have made it to the media and it seems that the same is now happening with the mattress runs.

I encourage people to take trips somewhere where they would like to go and to stay at a hotel rather than throwing them just a way. If you need some more elite qualifying miles or nights, rather have some fun time doing it, right?
