In the past week or so, I have received at least three emails/questions regarding the expiry of Hilton HHonors points, how to keep them alive and how to reactivate expired points.
Hilton requires qualifying activity in every 12 months or your points will just vanish. Readers have complained that they had not received any communication from HHonors that their points are expiring and what they should do to keep them.
Qualifying activity for extending the validity of points?
Here is the relevant part from the Hilton HHonors terms and conditions (you can access them here):
Members who do not have eligible activity as defined in a. – d. below in any 12 consecutive month period may be removed from the Program and are subject to forfeiture of all accumulated points. At the discretion of Hilton HHonors Worldwide, such Members may be permitted to remain in the Program and removed after five years of inactivity. To keep accumulated HHonors Points, the Member must take one of the following actions within a 12 consecutive month period:
a. stay at a hotel within the Hilton Worldwide portfolio pursuant to the terms herein;
b. earn HHonors Points through any third party source of HHonors Point accumulation, including a Hilton co-branded credit card, pursuant to its terms;
c. purchase HHonors Points; or,
d. donate points through The Hilton HHonors Giving Back Program.
So, the easiest thing to make sure that your points don’t expire is to buy some or make a points donation.
Reactivation of expired Hilton HHonors points
You can contact Hilton HHonors by phone, email or send them a Tweet and request reactivation of the expired points. Usually they require you to have few stays within a predetermined time to have the points reactivated or they may do it without you having to stay at all.
Here’s copy of email from LoyaltyLobby reader that she received from HHonors :
Thank you for contacting Hilton Guest Assistance. After looking into your husband’s account we did find the account points were forfeited due to inactivity. Based on this information, there is a standing offer to reactivate half of the Hilton HHonors points now and reactivate the rest of the points after four completed stays within a year timeframe. At this time there will be no further offers to reinstate his points.
Why do points expire or why Hilton HHonors wants to expire them?
The outstanding points are liability on Hilton’s balance sheet and by expiring them the future value of points can be kept lower. Hilton made some disclosures about the accounting of these points on their balance sheet that I covered on my earlier piece that you can access here.
Hilton HHonors is quite aggressive in expiring points for inactivity. We all can go through times in our lives when the travel drops temporarily and many will find out that Hilton has wiped out their HHonors balance.
Not everything is lost, however. Hilton has been offering these reactivation challenges that aren’t that difficult, if you have any further stays. Maybe you could do one of the Gold challenges at the same time?
