Hyatt Gold Passport claims that they don’t have blackout dates for awards. As long as the Hyatt Daily Rate is available, the base level room can be booked using points.
LoyaltyLobby reader forwarded me a screenshot from Park Hyatt Tokyo availability for December 31, 2013, for one night. Hyatt Daily Rate is available, but award rooms were not.
This is not guaranteed Platinum or Diamond availability.
Note that the screenshot is from last week and the hotel is now sold out for the date in question. Due to this, I am not able to replicate he issue.

Hyatt Gold Passport free night awards apply when standard rooms are available at the Hyatt Daily Rate. Standard rooms are defined by each hotel and are not subject to blackout dates. Hyatt Gold Passport free night awards cannot be redeemed for packages.
In the past, Hyatt hotels were required to make certain percentage of rooms available every night for awards. Once that allocation was used, the awards were gone unless hotel decided to offer more than the minimum required.
This sometimes lead to a situation, where the hotel was sold out, but rooms were still available for awards.
Does Hyatt have award blackout dates or not? If they do, it must be rare as his question surfaces only couple of times a year in a situation like the one here; room for a NYE in Tokyo or Sydney.
It doesn’t really matter to he hotel, whether they make award rooms available for such high occupancy periods, because Hyatt reimburses the hotel the ADR (Average Daily Rate) for the night in question, when the occupancy rate is 95% or higher.
On the contrary, I find the Marriott’s “No Blackout Dates” guarantee useless and misleading advertising, because it only means that there are no program wide blackout dates, but individual hotels can have them and they don’t have to make more of the base level rooms available for awards that what is minimum percentage mandated by the program.
