IHG Rewards Club British Airways & Iberia Avios Earning Changes

IHG Rewards Club has changed the number of Avios that you earn on British Airways Executive Club and Iberia Plus effective immediately.

EDIT: I have requested clarification from IHG if this website update is a mistake.

Edit 2: IHG now has the BA & Iberia Avios earning reverted back: IHG Rewards Club BA/IB Avios Earnings Update Mix Up (Reverted)

The number of Avios you earned used to be dependent of the dollar spend at the hotels except at the InterContinental properties outside of the Americas + InterContinental Alliance Resorts.

You can access IHG’s web page for airline partners here.

Here’s the comparison on number of Avios earned for IHG stays between British Airways and Iberia:

It is quite surprising that the number of Iberia Avios earned for IHG stays is so much higher compared to BA.

Conclusion

You should collect Iberia Plus Avios even as British Airways Executive Club member. You can link the accounts and transfer the Avios over from IB to BA at some later time.

It is difficult to understand why you earn just 500 BA Avios for InterContinental stay compared to 1,800 Iberia Avios.
