Delta made an announcement today about the higher fees to access the Sky Clubs and eliminating the guest access from those that enter the club using credit/charge card granted benefit.

Here’s the blurb from Delta’s email:

Even with these investments, we occasionally hear that overcrowding can be an issue. To maintain the Club’s exclusive atmosphere, the following changes are being introduced:

  • Effective immediately, membership price is $695 annually. This Executive Membership will continue to allow two complimentary guests.
  • For those customers who rarely need guest access, an Individual Membership at the current rate of $450 will be introduced Spring 2014. This membership will allow guest access for $29 per visit.
  • Beginning May 1, 2014, all customers who receive complimentary Delta Sky Club access as a benefit of their eligible credit or charge card will no longer receive complimentary guest access. A $29 fee per guest will apply.

Delta will introduce new “Executive Membership” at $250 higher price that will allow two guests. You can buy the individual membership at $450 and pay $29 every time you have guest accessing the club with you.

Delta will grandfather lifetime and 2 to 3-year Sky Club memberships at the Executive-level.

The main change is that those that have accessed the Sky Club as a benefit of the credit/debit card they carry are no longer allowed to bring guests without paying $29 fee.

You can access Delta’s web page for Sky Club here.

Conclusion

The price of the Sky Club is starting to get out of control. It still makes sense to pay for those that travel a lot on Delta and rely on the club agents to resolve issues with delays and cancellations.

If Delta considers that Sky Clubs are getting too crowded, maybe they should stop selling club access on Groupon and stop pushing it on individual access basis for infrequent travelers?

You have to bear in mind that AA/US recently dropped the club access altogether from Amex Platinum cardholders that can still continue to access Delta SkyClub’s, but without complimentary guest access.

Here are the terms and conditions from the email:

Executive Membership: All current one- and three-year single or joint memberships will be considered Executive and will receive complimentary access to Delta Sky Club for the member and up to two guests or their immediate family per visit, provided that Delta determines that adequate space exists, until membership expiration. Immediate family is defined as a spouse or domestic partner and children under 21 years of age. Members with an Executive Membership may bring in up to two additional guests at the rate of $29 per guest, per Club visit. At the time of expiration, members will have the option to purchase one of the membership plans available at that time. Effective January 10, 2014, the price of a new Executive Membership will be $695 per year. Platinum Medallion members will receive a $100 discount and Gold Medallion members will receive a $50 discount on the purchase of an Executive Membership through February 28, 2015.

Individual Membership: Individual Membership will cost $450 per year and will include complimentary Delta Sky Club access for the member only. Members with an Individual Membership may bring in up to two guests at the rate of $29 per guest, per Club visit. Medallion members will not receive a discount on Individual Membership.
